The wireless people are in my office again today. We've hired them to make wireless networking happen. We paid them ten thousand dollars to do this. They promised to have the network working several weeks ago. The network is not working. They told us that the problem was with our router, so we bought a new one. They told us that the problem was with our switch, so we bought a new one. They told us that we needed a bridge, so we bought one of those. The network still didn't work. They renumbered the netblocks they were using to see if that would make things work. It didn't. (The round of renumbering excitement pissed me off considerably because I could not see why they even considered this a viable attempt at a solution -- when the network does not work as configured, changing all the numbers on everything is not particularly going to help. That's like your car not starting and so you get out and rotate the tires. WTF?) I got mad at them so I changed the password on my fucking router so that they couldn't DO THINGS to it anymore. It's not THEIR fucking router and I don't see why they had to be in there fucking with MY router. Assholes. After all that, they took their radio away to run tests on it because maybe it was broken. Whatever. Today they brought the radio back but have thus far been singularly uninformative as to what the fuck their tests found. Probably it's all our fault, still. (We are not using off-brand routers. They're fucking Ciscos. They're the industry standard.) And now they're doing things again today. I wish, I wish they'd go away. I also want my ten thousand dollars back.

Update: I'm told we need NAT. Fuck me. They didn't say we needed NAT to start with. I asked. I asked in the first place. Honest, I did. There was much waving of hands and making of reassuring noises and I heard the words automagical and transparent. I am such a fuckwit.

Update 2: Now the guy has decided that his ethernet switch on his side of things is fucking itself. I've been saying that for a couple of weeks, y'know.

Typical vendors

Subject says it all. Want some magic beans? Howzabout a reach around? It's the least they could give, y'know. Good manners and all.

BTW, read Potter book. Call to discuss this evening if interested.

$10,000 to set up a wireless network? I hope that's including some good hardware and access authentication.

Includes a large antenna on a tower. They're apparently fairly expensive.

For ten thousand dollars, that damned antenna had better give backrubs and emit unicorns. Or at least be tall enough to require an aircraft-warning light.
