This is the preliminary track list of twenty songs for you. These are all songs I'm quite fond of, so there is merit in 'em. They are not 100% suckworthy, but I'll understand if they're not your cup of tea. I tried to pick things I didn't think you'd already heard, but if you're familiar with any of the stuff I've picked, let me know and I'll pick you something else instead. (Stuff that you don't think you would like does not count. Only stuff that you ALREADY KNOW is stuff that can be replaced.) If there's nothing you want to have replaced, let me know that too so that I can burn you a CD. Also, email me your mailing address, so I have somewhere to send this.
Big 6 -- We the Boys Will Rock Ya I expect this came from my brother Roy's wife Sarah -- she listens to a lot of things that I would otherwise never hear. It's kind of swing only not old. I don't know, maybe it's retro. It's catchy stuff, whatever it is.
Dave "Baby" Cortez -- The Happy Organ Instrumental that my dad listened to a lot when I was a kid.
Dropkick Murphys -- Worker's Song This is a Boston-based sort of Irish punk band thing. Occasionally I worry that I don't have the working-class cred to listen to music about workers, what with belonging to the class of people exploiting the workers and all, but mostly I don't let that get in the way of the music. My friend La's boy Ash likes this band a lot and he made me listen to them.
Eminem -- My Fault To my enormous surprise, the guy has some talent as a lyricist. He also gives full value for angry white boy, if you're into that. Anyway, this is one of his songs that I like. This is the version with, y'know, swearwords and drug use references and so forth because we're adults and I think you can handle it. :)
Flogging Molly -- Death Valley Queen This is another Irish punk band thing. I like the vocals on this better than the vocals of the Dropkick Murphys and, well, I just like this song. Amazon.com told me I would like these people and they were right. Life is too short not to have lyrics like I found me a whore with a face just like yours after several gallons of porter.
Joanne Shenandoah -- She's Fond of the Sky Estrogen-power rah-rah womyn music sung in (iirc) Iroquois. This is not at all the sort of thing I would buy for myself and, sooth, I got it from my mother. I expected to hate it, but I don't.
Johnny Cash -- Tennessee Flat Top Box I just like this one.
Kanye West -- We Don't Care Apparently this is rap, nowadays. And, y'know, social commentary. Amazon.com told me to buy it and I did. (I do not always do what amazon tells me to do, even though, at this point, I appear to be nothing more than a robot with one-click-ordering turned on.)
Kid Rock -- Wasting Time My cousin Sandra informed me that Kid Rock did not suck. She was right. Like Eminem, there's some lyrical talent here.
Kingston Trio -- Guantanamera My parents are from before there were hippies. This is the sort of thing they listened to. I grew up being very familiar with The Kingston Trio.
Kosono -- The Lion and the Goat Back in the days of dot-com foolishness, I went to a trade show. At the trade show, venture capitalist money funded after-hours parties. One of the parties (and I have forgotten whose party, possibly Netopia's) featured this band. I bought their CD at the party because they were selling it.
Lucinda Williams -- 2 Good 2 Be 4-Gotten This is from
gwangi, who suggested it a couple of weeks ago. He was all KINDS of right. It's the sort of thing I like.
Makem & Clancy -- Faigfaidh Mise An Baile Seo This is gaelic, but the band mostly sings in English. I have an embarrassingly large collection of their stuff and I sing along with all of it. This is what imprinting can do to a person. My parents drove us to Mexico in the late seventies with three eight track tapes, one of which was these guys. We listened to the tape a lot and apparently it warped my little mind.
Mary Prankster -- Punk Rock Heaven From
fooliv, who suggested them back when I wanted some music to listen to. I particularly like the heroin references in this song.
Mason Jennings -- Duluth I found out about Mason Jennings from
insidian, to whom I should be thankful. It's good stuff.
O-Zone -- Dragostea Din Tei This is a pop song in Romanian that made the rounds of the internet a while back. It's quite catchy.
Snoop Dogg -- Gin and Juice My brother told me that I should listen to some of this. He was right. Snoop Dogg has an unmistakable, kind of drawling delivery -- you can pick him out in a crowd. He has a style. He has technique. It's worth listening to, if for no other reason than that you'd like to be informed about hating it. (My other brother hates Snoop Dogg and refers to him as "That Murdering N--" so tastes differ. YMMV.)
Sublime -- Caress Me Down I am inexplicably in love with this song. It's just really neat. I think it came off a DVD of my brother Roy's wife's music but my brother Joe also suggested it as something I would like.
TMR -- Neo Sphere Two years ago at Otakon, I got the CD and had it signed because I could. Turns out that some of the CD is amazingly listen-to-able. If someone could please point me in the direction of a worthwhile CD from L'Arc, I'd buy one of those too.
Uncle Bonsai -- Enterprising Young Man At
not_your_real's wedding reception, she gave away stuff. This was one of CDs she gave away. There was a twinkie on the cover.

Date: 2005-06-11 03:34 pm (UTC)So far the only thing I've experimented with that I really *didn't* like was Beck--and I only listened to about 5 or 6 songs before I decided they all sounded like car crashes and gave up. (Everyone says how Beck has no defined style, that he's different with every song--and I could sort of hear that--I mean there was the rap-ish car wreck, and the sort of folk-y car wreck, and the rock car wreck. But they all sounded like car wrecks so I stopped listening.)
I'll email you my mailing address.
I'm still dealing with technical difficulties in burning CDs--my CD burning software won't speak with the burner and that's just one of the difficulties--once I get it all worked out I'll burn some nice mix thing for you. It'll be interesting to see how much our tastes overlap. :)

Date: 2005-06-12 03:29 am (UTC)I'm more worried that the irish punk bands will sound to you like a keg of nails falling down the stairs. It takes a couple of times through before they stop sounding like that...
Finally, hadn't you asked for things you had never heard before? These are they. Horizons will be broadened. And, y'know, it's all free, so if you think it sux0rs, just chalk it up to my crappy taste in music and we'll move on. :)
