Because I am an idiot and because Barry's traditional start-of-summer ride that has traditionally been on the three-day-weekend is NOT on the three-day-weekend this year but, instead, is next weekend, I did not go out and adventure with the insane red horse as planned yesterday. I did go out on the insane red horse, who was reasonably well-behaved, but it wasn't the outing I'd originally had in mind. It was still a good outing. Since there wasn't a ride at Barry's for this weekend, La hauled the horses down here. As Joe and Stacey were visiting, I sat in the yard with them and Duncan and Gwen and we blew bubbles while waiting for the horses to show up. (We didn't tell Duncan about the potential for horses because we wanted it to be a surprise.) Duncan was pretty thrilled with the horses. He got a couple of trips around the lodge on Ike (Boo's horse. Boo is three. So is Duncan.) which made Boo ask if that boy was taking her horse away. Once we got organized, we went up the mountain and down the mountain and around the lake and it was good. We also saw a car and went past it with only a little bullshit on the part of the insane red horse. I discovered that I could swing up on the insane red horse if I stand her in a smallish ditch -- this is important so that I don't go to get on and fail miserably. My pride takes a hell of a beating when that happens. It was also La's second ride on Mezcal, and that went beautifully, too. All in all, it was just really nice.

The following morning, Duncan told his mother that he wanted to go out into the yard to blow bubbles so that the truck and horse trailer with the horses in it would come back.

I also planted my summer squash and zukes yesterday and I'm pleased to report that my collard plants have sprouted. They're not very big yet, but they've got cotelydons above the dirt, so that's a start. Collards and summer squash and zukes are all dicots because they have two cotelydon leaves. Some monocots are corn and grasses. The monocot vs. dicot division is pretty much used to divide the wonderful world of angiosperms (flowering plants) and you can read more about this highly entertaining stuff here.
