Tonight is the prom for Everett High School. As of two days ago, La's boy Ash decided he wanted a hot-pink satin cummerbund and a matching bow tie. (He's got strikingly red hair. I said I didn't think that hot pink was a good color for him, but he said that his girlfriend liked hot pink and that he didn't care what his accessories looked like on him.). Since we live in conservative redneck hell and were operating on a very short timeframe, hot-pink tux accessories were not to be had for purchase or rental. The best we could do was hot pink satin fabric and a pattern, sort of a cummerbund and bow tie in the raw, some assembly required. Fortunately, I have an aunt who sews, quite speedily and with some skill, so I asked her to generate accessories from the raw materials, in less than 24 hours, which she did. I delivered same (quite spiffy, btw) to the boy's mother about half an hour before he was to pick up his date for the prom. She was highly impressed and also cell-phoned me later to let me know that the accessories were a hit with Ash. I expect that next time I need a gallon of milk (for cheese experiments) saved out of the cow, there will be rather less bitching and moaning. :) What goes around comes around.

And, well, I owe SJ something very nice. I'll see what I can provide on that front, as she really came through for me on this one.

I have a busy weekend planned, so there might not be horribly informative and entertaining posts for a few days. Tomorrow I have horse stuff planned, followed by driving to Baltimore and dinner out (heaven alone knows where) with my mother. I'll be spending the night there and opera-ing the following day, driving home Sunday night. Monday morning at 10 AM is the evil perio guy, to boot. For someone with no social life, I stay pretty busy.

Hot pink satin cummerbund and bow-tie?? Well, at least Ash was happy about it. I wonder what the girlfriend thought.

Maybe you can give SJ some of the cheese you may eventually make from La's cow's milk. :)

SJ does not eat or enjoy experimental food items. She's pretty traditional and unexciting on that front. Probably I'll wind up re-roofing her porch.

This story kind of reminds me of my brother-in-law (who is 7 years younger than Todd) who went to a quinceañeras a few years ago. He had to go to group dance lessons for something like 6 weeks beforehand to learn the styles of Mexican formal dancing, then he had a purple brocade vest and bow-tie to wear to the event, as the girl's colors were purple and white. The girls all had purple formal dresses and the boys had the vests and ties with their tuxes. The group photo is really quite impressive.
