I have precisely 11.17 seconds of video done. I hate my life. This was not a good idea. Do you have any idea how long it takes to fucking make that much sync'd video? Any idea? Not counting pulling clips off the source, mind. That's a thing of beauty in its own right. I'm just talking about the clip assembly-and-timing part, here.

To make a character sing along to the lyrics in an AMV (anime music video), you need to find a video clip where the character is talking. You'll need to look at each frame in the clip to make sure his mouth is the only thing moving. This is important. Even if his head/eyes/hair/whatever only move a little, it'll fuck things up. You need a clip where JUST THE MOUTH moves. Fortunately, due to the way anime is produced, this should not be an impossible thing to find. With any luck, you'll have at least three lip positions (closed, half open, full open) to play with. Once you've found that, you're golden as far as source material. Isolate small chunks of each of these... two or three frames of each lip position. Stick 'em together and look at the result, just to make sure the rest of the frame doesn't move... better you find this out NOW than after you have done eighty or so frames of frame-by-frame (How can I explain it?) editing.

Use these tiny building blocks to generate lip flap that matches the song words and tempo. You'll have your song open in something like Audacity so that you can see how long each word takes. If you're not sure what the mouth should look like, try saying the words yourself to see what your mouth does. Do your best guess, make copious notes, and append/trim your building blocks to make the song lyric. Export, with sound, and see how it goes. (This is about like trying to drive somewhere using a map and a stopwatch in a car where the windows have all been painted black.)

It is a good idea to synch the whole line because if you cut to another scene before the line is done, people who make AMVs will know that you have chickened out because you're so damn tired of making lip flap and they will snicker at you behind their hands.

Remember, you're using a linear editor because you cannot bring yourself to tolerate the 24 fps of Adobe when your source is 23.976 fps. (This COULD be close enough if you could just get over the fact that it isn't RIGHT and that it bothers you that it isn't right. There are workarounds that are good enough to be getting on with. But no, you couldn't possibly be having with that. No. Not you.)

Want to see what it looks like? (You may need the XviD codec, which you can download for free here: http://www.xvidmovies.com/codec/ )

This is four seconds of video, about a meg. It's not very compressed because I am not done with it yet and this was just a quick check to see what it looked like: http://www.bedford.net/teep/clip.avi

Yes i do know how hard it is. I have been working on an AMV of my own. It's hard to do it right.

Ooh, ooh, whatchoo working on? (No, I do not want your idea. I have MY idea, the one which has not left my head in two or three years.) Also, I do not think I have more than one AMV in me, so no worries on that front, either.

This little project has forced me to upgrade laptop RAM (to a gig) and to buy a firewire dvd burner thingie for it. I need somewhere to put stuff because, man, video just grinds up disk space and I don't have an unlimited supply. This thing only has a twenty gig drive -- it's a couple of years old, after all, and it's a freaking laptop.
