The Great British Baking Show

which_chickI've been netflixing The Great British Baking Show, which is just very comforting viewing. But also it is inspiring me to make food.
So one of the things I've been noticing is that it's very fucking British in that there is a lot more custard-y pudding-y shit going on in their pastry than in my general run of pastry. I kinda like custard-y pudding things a lot but they don't get much mileage in my cooking for people because Lala does not like anything on the custard/pudding spectrum. It's a texture issue, and that makes me very sad because I am fucking awesome at things on the custard/pudding spectrum. *sigh*
I can pastry cream. I have eclair'd at home for no reason other than I wanted to make eclairs and neither pastry cream nor choux was difficult. But I don't really want to fuck with eclairs and I just honestly would enjoy some fucking pastry cream. It's delicious. I think I'd feel a certain amount of guilt eating just pastry cream for... reasons, but I seem to recall that it was a hell of a summer for raspberries and so I have upwards of three pounds of the little fuckers in the freezer, IQF so that some at a time may be used from any individual ziplock. So, there could be raspberry glop (the thing that goes in raspberry pastries and on top of crepes and so forth) ... with the pastry cream? And I put real cream (the kind for whipping) in my coffee. So there could be whipped cream. You can make whipped cream from a really quite tiny amount of cream. I think whipped cream and pastry cream and raspberry glop could be attractively layered, say, in a glass, and consumed as a legit food item.
Yeah. I think pastry cream, glop, whipped cream, glop, pastry cream, glop, whipped cream. In a pint glass. I should have some sort of small long-handled iced-tea spoon to eat this with, but alas, ain't got one. It's gonna be a regular unclassy spoon. And a coffee alongside. I should take a picture if it's pretty. (I wanna pipe, but there will be no piping if I'm the one doing cleanup. Maybe I could use a ziplock with the corner cut off? Then there would be no cleanup?)
Why? I put the plow and the chains on the truck with (helper), Brother-the-Elder's child who shall not appear in any way, shape, form, or mention online. No real name, no pictures, ever. Brother-the-Elder also watched and learned but (helper) actually helped more, in suitable-for-eight-year-olds ways. (Helper) was very interested in the plow truck and would like to ride along for a plow event if (a) we have one and (b) that could be scheduled. Asked me how much horsepower plow truck has, which fuckifIknow. Plow truck is a 1999 Triton V-10. Google says 310 horsepower? W/e. It's a beast and it gets shit mileage and we only drive it for Big Truck applications plus plowing.
Lookit! Here it is! All set for winter.
Anyway, if it snows (which it will likely not now because I've got the chains and plow on the truck), I will be having (helper) for a ridealong.
Pastry cream is fucking simple. Milk, egg yolks, flour, cornstarch, sugar. Vanilla. Chill. That's in the fridge, covered with plastic to keep a skin from forming.
Raspberry glop is made. It's on the counter, cooling to room temp. (If it's hot, it'll melt the whipped cream.)
Whipped cream is made, plus also super quick n dirty piping bag for it. I broke out the star tip.
Et voila.
How was it? Delicious. I coulda done better on the pastry cream, it's a bit overcooked and not quite as smooth as I'd like, but it still tastes like da bomb. And if I practiced piping, I would be better at it. Heck, if there were more than a tablespoon and a half of whipped cream in the piping bag, I'd be better at it. Also, it is not easy to layer this shit and have it look nice.
But even with all that left wanting, it tasted great. The coffee to go with was a good choice.
Holiday weekend over, and we're back to work tomorrow. Squeaky Wheel is making an early night of it.
