Artwork from the Mordecai

During the 2020 year of the pandemic, when the Mordecai was 7, maybe, he did this artwork. (He is now times-tables size. Ten? Yeah. He's ten. So he did this when he was 7.) Lala showed me the artwork today, kind of in passing, and I was like... that's a pretty damn good artwork for a fucking seven year old. Lala thought so too, which is why she hung onto it since then.
Now, I know fuck-all about art. I am not an art-er. I do not do the art. I am not that guy. The best I have ever done in my life is craft. I am not fluent in art. However, I do have some handy-dandy family that arts and can consult on arting.
My mom has two sisters, Linda (dead now) and Charlotte (not dead yet). Both Linda and Charlotte had an art kid apiece. My mom didn't have any art kids.
My cousin Rob (Linda's son) is an artist, makes a living painting, supports three kids and a wife doing it, and does not have some other real job that supports his artistic stuff. He supports himself and his family with his art. Ffs, my cousin Rob's work is hanging in the Met. (Both the Met and I have an original painting by my cousin on our walls. Bet you didn't expect that to be a thing, didja? Mine does not really look like his other stuff, but it is a great picture and I really like it, so... yeah.)
My other cousin Aaron (Charlotte's boy) also makes his living doing art. Aaron is the Art Specialist for the Performing Arts Center at Auburn University. It's more commercial art, graphic and logo design and shit but it is still largely art and he does it for money.
They get paid to do the wild thing.
My aunt Charlotte also arts. She taught art classes for years and also arted herself. I have original pencil drawings of hers on my bedroom wall that she did when I was a child. Charlotte also did not so much "take baby pictures" as "did baby portraits" that were drawn. Like, she did a book of portraits of Aaron as an infant and (1) they look stunning and (2) they look just like him and (3) my fucking god that is so amazing it's goddamn magical. (Again, I cannot art. I have other skills.)
Anyway, so while I do not, myself, have any chops in the art world, I do have phone a friend capabilities should I need more information about art or art potential. So anyway, Lala showed me this Mordecai picture and I was like, fuck, that's not a bad art for a seven year old kid. But hell, I know fuck-all about art and maybe real art people who speak art would be "Aw, hell, that's nothing, it's not interesting and it's not original and it's not got a lot to say for a seven year old kid." I needed an expert opinion. So I took a picture of the art and texted it off to my mom and she sent it to Charlotte (who is slowly going blind in what has got to be one of the world's more cruel moments) to get an expert opinion regarding any arting potential.
This is the picture:

Anyway, Charlotte looked at the picture and she thinks that we should encourage him in the direction of arting to see what else he might do. So, yeah. If he were a talentless hack (He is ten years old now, this was done when he was seven. Absolutely no child who wants to art is a talentless hack until at least fourteen or so.) she would have said.

Date: 2023-11-26 04:40 pm (UTC)The spite chocolates (there's a tag) were pretty darned good. They were reasonably competent, but they were not as awesome as they could have been and there were no beautiful piped toppings and I should have done more with foot trimming and I do not feel I pursued the extent of what I could have done there on the decorative and presentation fronts. A good product, but a flawed one.
The hohi (there's a tag) were very nice. Still are very nice. They are awesome. But there were things, there, that I could also have done better.
*sigh*
Probably this is a personal failing.
