So I have a fella, whose name is Sam. He appears in passing here occasionally but only because he's not, like, a source of things-to-bitch-about. Sam's a good guy and I do not complain about him overmuch.
He likes cats, which is good. I have two cats.
This is Kobayashi Maru, "Kobe". He is about 17.5 lbs and kind of a dork. Kindly and stuff but not a ton of personality there. On the plus side, he is a handsome and easygoing fellow so the fact that he's the same size as a large-ish Jack Russell Terror (that is how they spell it, isn't it?) is not much of a problem.

This is Ungrateful Bastard, "Youbee". She's about 8 lbs and very personable WITH ME but not real big on any other people at all. She is very, very soft. Like, exceptionally soft.

For what it's worth, Youbee is a 2008 model and Kobe is a 2011 cat. They are allowed outside during daylight hours when I am at home not because I am an irresponsible cat owner but because (a) they come when called and (b) they are approximately two miles and 800 feet of elevation away from A Paved Road Where They Could Get Squished. Both of them are fixed and neither goes that far from home.
Anyway, Sam really likes Youbee. She is very soft. Youbee does not particularly like Sam (or any other humans besides me). While she is on my lap helping me watch Rachel on Youtube or on my bed keeping my feet warm at night or following me around the house, she is invisible when he's here. Getting to a situation where Sam can pet Youbee involves me holding her down. If I let go, she leaves. He isn't petting wrongly, she just doesn't do other people well. (I live alone and do not get a lot of company. She is insufficiently socialized... well-behaved, but not really friendly. You can handle her safely, but if you let go, she's Audi 5000.)
Sam had cats as a youngster but does not currently have a pet. He really wants a soft kitty that is friendly and that he can pet. Youbee, obviously, will not suit and I'm not giving her up anyway. She is MY KITTY.
So, I got him a Soft Kitty of his own. Soft Kitty does not have an actual name yet so she goes by a descriptor, "Soft Kitty". She is (now) fixed and vaccinated and (vet's best guess) 6 months old. Soft Kitty weighs 5.2 lbs and is of a dainty persuasion (head and feet are smol) so she won't get a lot bigger than she is now. She's currently valued at $132.00 and looks like this:

Note that Soft Kitty is nowhere near the looker that Youbee is. She's not ugly, but she's not striking. She would not be striking even if I got out the Good Camera instead of the cellphone. Kobe, who is not as pretty as Youbee, is also more strikingly handsome than Soft Kitty. But Sam didn't want a STUNNINGLY ATTRACTIVE kitty. He wanted a FRIENDLY SOFT KITTY that he could hold and pet, one that would not try to escape from him. And brother, Soft Kitty (handled extensively by a five year old boy) is FRIENDLY and VERY SOFT. Damn thing purrs like a bulldozer even when being unskillfully petted. VERY FRIENDLY. LOVES PETTING. Also VERY SOFT. Softer than Youbee. Gonna stay soft, too. He gets to meet her on Tuesday.
(In the extremely unlikely event that Sam, who has been my fella for like ten years or so, does not actually want a Soft Kitty (even though he has repeatedly said things like "You should get me a Soft Kitty" and "Why can't you find me a Soft Kitty for my house?"), she will go back to the farm where she came from and live out her kitten-free life happily in the tack shed, barn, and other outbuildings like she was doing before I drug her off to the vet for some upgrades. But I'm pretty sure he's gonna go for Soft Kitty.)

Date: 2019-02-17 03:12 am (UTC)This is her, an oddly light tabby with vaguely long hair. I call her Zingiber officinale. Everyone else calls her Ginger. She has never had a kitten the same color as her, either. It'd be awesome if she did but she does not.
Kobe, pictured above, is a product of Zingiber officinale. So is Soft Kitty, who will get nowhere near as large as Kobe.
Hannibal and Clarice (Brother-the-Younger's two kitties, a pair of mackerel tabbies) are Zingiber products as well. This is them, partially grown:
Here are Ghost & Nepenthe (my cousin San's two kitties, one mackerel and one grey. They are the infant kitties in the Ginger picture, above.)
Ghost:
Nepenthe:
Ginger is old and has no teeth left. Most barn cats are done when they have no teeth, but she is apparently the energizer bunny of barn cats. It honestly would not pay to fix her, she's got to be at least thirteen. So, we find homes for the kittens and keep hoping she ages out of this whole kitten thing. *sigh* Such is the life of a barn cat in Greater Rednecklandia.
