Zipper for a turn today. He was a total rockstar.
We went down into the holler to the bottom and back out and over to the jumps and did walk-trot-walk transition work and he was a gentleman the entire time. No fake-buck bullshit, no humping up of the back, no nasty tight crap and even some moderately relaxed trot work.
I know this sounds dumb and stuff, but he’s still got no muscle and is not confident or steady going forward. He needs to get that going on before we can do much else and he’s not really even ready for big 30-meter trot circles because he’s so damn wobbly and unbalanced.
More marching up and down hills, walk-trot-walk transition work, and practice bending on turns and gentle steering/rating efforts in trot will help him prepare to move forward. I can’t do much about the fact that this sort of work is as exciting as watching paint dry.
I also introduced the concept of ‘move sideways off of my leg’ though it needs a bit of work before I can call it a leg yield to anyone but you, dear internets. Zipper also has pretty solid halts and backs up politely.
And today was S-S-M-T-W so day 5 of the streak. Go me!
