Yesterday Theron trimmed up Whimsy's feet a bit, so now they look half decent. Today, I took her out riding, across the hill and back. It was maybe ten minutes of riding and about thirty or forty minutes of sampling alfalfa and grass.
I started in the driveway, worked on start/stop/turn for both directions. That went well, in and out the driveway a couple of times, then I got off near the woodshed and crossed the road (me on foot) for alfalfa sampling. After that, I led PH to the vague road alongside the alfalfa and got on her (while she stood still five feet from knee-high alfalfa) and walked and trotted (on request) up the hill to the top, where I halted, backed up two steps, and got off. Then PH ate some grass and I hung out a while. Then I got back on her and rode down the hill and across the road (aboard horse now) to wide spot in driveway, turned around and *trotted* away from home again, turned around at the road, back to the wide spot, and I got off.
It was a good day. Today I was just riding in a halter, though PH has worn a bridle and doesn't seem too upset about it. I need to transition her to riding in a bridle maybe later this week but I'm happy enough right now with solidifying her responses to get up, whoa, and turn in a halter at the moment. Also, her head is too big for my preferred bridle. :( Trys says she'll go on a trail ride with me tomorrow after work, down into the hollow and up around the buckwheat field. If that goes well, we (PH and me, with Trys on whomever) can ride to the covered bridge and back on the following day. If there are no difficulties with that, I can start conditioning rides with or without company and PH can be moved from the "unbroke" column to the "needs mileage" column.
