So I'm making an ad to pitch the state competitive ride (yeah, the one I won with my horse) in our 4-H horse show program book. I've had forever to do this and I'm just lazy so it wasn't done today (the due date). La texted me this morning that she needed an ad, so I made the ad after lunch and sent it off for her approval.

Here's the ad, mostly:

FEEL LIKE YOU'RE GOING IN CIRCLES?

MAYBE YOU NEED A CHANGE OF PACE...

(line drawing of a competitive trail horse-n-rider, trotting)

THE KEYSTONE RIDE
Pennsylvania State 4-H Competitive Trail Ride
September 23 & 24, 2011

THINK OUTSIDE THE RING!

The drawing is stolen, but since the program book has a circulation of about two hundred I don't think it will be a major problem. It's also not something that is sold and we aren't making any money from using the drawing. It's still wrong, yeah, and I get that. However, I am not terribly worried about being sued and I will sleep fine tonight.

At any rate, I'm chuffed about my advertisement. It's clever. I like clever. Let me to be telling you about the clever that so pleases me. Just nod and smile and pretend to be amused. I don't expect much on the response front, here, mostly I just like to hear myself type. (The clicky noises of my keyboard are soothing.)

Clever the first: "going in circles" is both literal and figurative. Going in circles is the basic modality in horse showing. Since the phrase is also an expression for "not making any progress" or "going nowhere", the statement can apply when read literally and also when read figuratively. This is the kind of tidy clever that I so enjoy.

Clever the second: "a change of pace" is another of the same sort of thing. If you opt for competitive trail, you will be going for a change of pace in the speeding-up direction. It'll also be "a change of pace" in terms of doing something new. Literal and figurative.

Not-as-clever the third: "Think outside the ring!" is mostly for the people who are too stupid to get the first two clevers. Most people will manage to get that this is sort of "Think outside the box" only for horses. Even if they don't get that, it works literally, that you should try doing something with your horse that doesn't involve being in a show ring.
