Jan. 25th, 2009 09:55 pmSo La got Trys another mp3 player, this one a Sony Walkman NWZ-B105F. Nothing I could do today would make the fucking thing discuss matters with my laptop. Lsusb gave me, yeah, it's there. Yes. But it's not there. It kept trying to mnt as a scsi device and then told me that there wasn't a file system handy.
Here's the appropriate dmesg output:

It wouldn't mnt as sdb and it couldn't find a filesystem and I gave up on trying after about three hours and a complete rebuild of hal. The laptop runs Ubuntu Hardy Heron (8.04), AMD64, if that helps. I also didn't have any luck getting the Walkman working via Gnomad 2, which supposedly makes happy with MTP devices even if they don't mount the usual way. (The Sony Walkman NWZ is not a MTP device or at least it doesn't *have* to be.) Also, I wish like hell that they called it something *other* than "mount" because that is just not doing my brain any good at all. My inner twelve year old is snickering like Beavis and Butthead, here.
To get music on the thrice-damned thing, which I said I would do, I admitted defeat, booted up the elderly XP laptop I stole from the office, and plugged in the Walkman. It perked right up like a senior citizen on Viagra and said Boy Howdy to the XP. Fucker. Fucking whore.
At that point, I figured I'd just hook up my Iomega external drive to the elderly laptop. All my music is backed up onto the iomega, so I thought I'd be able to just drag and drop and stuff. Turns out that the elderly laptop does not wish to speak to my iomega drive because it tries to suck more power through the USB than the elderly USB feels is appropriate. Or something. I got several rounds of weird errors before giving up. So. The laptop with the music on it does not speak to the fucking Walkman. The external hard drive with the music doesn't speak to the laptop that speaks to the Walkman. Argh. I finally wound up BURNING DAMNED CDs so that I could put the music on the Walkman. LIttle plastic discs died so that I could put music on Trysta's mp3 player, I will have you know.
Following the MP3 Player Ordeal, I felt about ready for a round of better living through chemistry, I swear. Unfortunately, the house had OTC cough syrup, Neosporin ointment, and Excedrin. Not much for options, is it? I don't think much good would result from attempts to freebase Neosporin or whatever, so no. Oh, and there's wine and probably some rum if I wanted to then post drunkenly to you people. *sigh* Not so much.
So. What did she get? Lots of stuff. A selection of things that I think she needs more exposure to, plus some things that I think she'll like plus some things that I know she will like. I put three hundred eighty seven songs on the thing (I left her some room for her things) and I tried for variety. I did include all the Rammstein albums I had (she's a fan) because I'm nice like that but otherwise the stuff I gave her was all over the map. We'll see how she does with it.
