I have a meme.

1. Grab the book nearest you. Right now.
2. Turn to page 56.
3. Find the fifth sentence.
4. Post that sentence along with these instructions in your LiveJournal.
5. Don't dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.

This is a meme I've done before and it apparently is designed for people whose houses only have one book nearby. I don't have a house like that. There are many books in my house. In fact, there are several books within arm's reach, all arguably "closest" as they're in a verticalish stack and I can reach any one of them without having to shift off my fat ass. Here's the list:

1. Rosalind Mitchison: A History of Scotland.
2. Wm. Thackary: Vanity Fair
3. Catherine Coulter: Sweet Surrender (Bodice ripper. Not gratuitous budsum. For that, I read the elf porn books and the YBP.)
4. Terry Pratchett: Wyrd Sisters
5. Ragahavan Iver: 660 Curries
6. John Harold Wilson, editor: Six Restoration Plays
7. Rochester, complete poems and plays, Paddy Lyons, editor

These books were selected because they were the closest. For real. All are within arm's reach. I could have picked "cooler" books. I have cooler books. The fucking riverside Chaucer is only at the end of the couch... but I'd have to stretch to reach it. I would also not admit to reading Catherine Coulter were it not one of the in-reach books. (We are not going to discuss how many times I've read the fucking thing, either.)

Here's the line from each book, you guys can match 'em the fuck up. :)

A: They had a bun too, sir.

B: I know I have rarely been so sure of anything that Randall Bennett is the lowest kind of man, a fortune hunter.

C: Already, I say.

D: "Darling! Not for worlds," said Miss Sharp, starting back as timid as a fawn.

E: The Poetess Aphra next showed her sweet face and swore by her poetry and her black ace that laurel by a double right was her own, for the plays she had writ and the conquest she had won.

F: Things would now be easier.

G: Repeat three or four times, until the water remains relatively clear; drain.

I am not an overachiever. I'm not. (I was also bloody well amazed at how freaking clear one sentence is in identifying a fairly large piece of writing. Wowzers.)

Well, at least I know which one was the curry recipes...

: )

I remember liking Vanity Fair. But that was thirty years ago.
