Busy day today. I salted sidewalks (sleet stopped yesterday, after 4 PM) and think they'll probably melt out today, given that it was already at freezing by 8:00 AM. I dunned tenant for money (successful) and told him I'd be back next week for more money. (He's making payments.)
I picked up Youbee from the vet. (FeLV negative, obviously. If she'd turned up positive for feline leukemia, I'd have gotten her put down and invested in another free cat. There is no point doing spay/shots on a cat that will likely die in three years. No. I will only put that kind of money into a healthy cat.) She did not like the vet place. (I don't like the vet place either. The vet place acted like they suspected me of not-being-able-to-pay-the-bill, which pisses me off. They did this last time I had a cat spayed there, too. It must be a feature of the vet place. So, I took a wad of cash along when I went to pick up the cat and paid in full for her then even though they couldn't give me a price either of the two times I asked for one over the phone.) Youbee did not like riding in the truck. She does appear to be happy to be home, though. Youbee is now a two-hundred-and-forty-dollar cat, so obviously much better looking, classier, and totally higher quality than she was when she was a free cat.
For the terminally confused, 1 free cat, plus spay, plus shots = $240.00. Those who point out that I could have a pedigreed cat for that kind of money should note that then I'd have a $240.00 designer cat plus also $240.00 of vet work = $480.00, which is more money than I am willing to put into a cat for what I deem to be inconsequential added value. I am not impressed with pedigreed cats. Some of them are pretty, yes, but so are the cats I take home. I do not select unattractive cats from the free cat pool. They have to be both free AND attractive. Personality, another thing cat breeders say that their breeds have, doesn't impress me much because I feel that cat personality is pretty malleable provided you get to the cat when it's young and beat good manners into it. Once personality and looks are accounted for, there isn't much else pedigree has to offer me, so I get free cats and aftermarket upgrade them to value-added cats.
The cat has a followup appointment near the end of February for additional shots.
After I finish this post, I'm going to take a shower, hunt for grandma pictures, take my camera, cable, and laptop to Heather's to do grandma-picture-crap with her digital picture frame, and then hie off to Roaring Spring to meet Marybeth for the alpaca adventure at 3. I might also schlep along some handicrafts so that I can entertain myself between "do grandma picture crap" and "meet Marybeth at 3".
