Note to self: It is best to wash the knife you used to cut up jalapenos before you use it to cut up an apple. You like apples better when they are not burny.

Okay. Since the HoHI are totally, like, finished and have been washed and blocked and dried... they're done. They are as done as they can be without being worn for real. (I will be wearing them for real for the first time to the weekend outing -- other than a few celebratory walks about the house, that'll be their first use.) It's time to look back over the project and consider what I could have done differently, better, or more skillfully.

This post will be illustrated by crappy pictures. We will all pretend that these are good pictures. Pretend. Pretend, I say.

socksinsnow

Okay. You've all seen the socks. Yay socks.

Now, you're going to get to see the socks the way I see the socks.

Side note: Please don't tell me that I should not be bashing my knitting. Bashing is how I learn. It's theraputic for me. It doesn't mean I don't *like* the HoHI. I love 'em. I think they're amazing and I'm pretty damn pleased that I was able to do 'em. But, like with the IRH, just because I adore something doesn't mean I can't see what is wrong with it. That said, let's take a look at places I fucked up could improve. Picture first, then description of the issue.

dentforelastic

Adding elastic to my socks makes a dent for the elastic. This is way less visible when the socks are on my body, but for the un-worn porn shots, it makes 'em look weird.

crappykitchener

My kitchener sucks. I held the two colors of yarn together for this because I was too lazy to do each one individually in the appropriate color. This does not make me a bad person, but my choice is visible in the finished product. I could have done better and chose not to do so.

kitchenerbump

My kitchener also has a weird bump (usually only on one side). This pisses me off and I need to learn a better way to not-have-that-bump.

inelegantheel

I am not in love with the way I transitioned from the heel to the sole of the sock. I did manage to get the stripes to maintain in 2x2 (not without some effort) but I didn't do it as prettily as I'd have liked. See the wee buried red sts in there? No? I can see 'em. I suspect (but do not know) that there is some rule-of-thumb for doing this better than I did it. More research is needed.

pgtension

Overall, my tension does not suck which kind of surprised me. I knit kind of tightly and thought that I'd have a crunched-up piece of crap... but no. My OCD things must be even and symmetric and ALL THE SAME won out over my tight knitting. Yay?

tensionlumps

I did have a repeating bumpy tension problem (shown here twice) at the diagonal stripes where the pointy bit of the front/backmotif hit it. This was on one side only -- I think at a needle change. Each time it happened, I got three lumps in a row. I've put needles at the left-hand start of the three lumps problem area, twice.) In blocking, the vast bulk of this came out and a normal person would not even know it was a problem. I can still see it but only a little.

rusheddecrease

I totally rushed the start of the decreases into the toe. That's visible here (needle pointing at problem area -- the black more so than the red, though) but this stretches out OK when I am wearing the socks. Blocking also helped minimize the lumpy part.

weirddecrease

When I did the gusset decreases, they came out nice on one side and weird (kind of jagged, visible on the right hand side in this image) on the other. It bothers me that they don't match and are not mirror images of each other on the two different socks. I needed to do more research on the ssk vs. k2tog thing to find out how to make this work properly and I didn't do the research. I suspect it has to do with staggering the color changes one-early so that they'll be right for the change, but I didn't test this. Bad me.

whichhandisred

There are a couple of instances (visible only from the inside of the sock) where, for less than a whole round and for less than ten rounds total, I forgot which color was supposed to be in which hand DESPITE the fact that my pattern says LEFT HAND RED at the top of it.

But, y'know, I did okay with these. An astonishing number (34 at the moment) of folks over in Ravelry have favorited the HoHI. Man, I hope they don't think everything I do is that good...

Most of those are things that are visible only to your, but I noticed the jagged-ness on the gusset decreases when you posted the first pictures of the socks and thought it looked really *awesome*. Like a feature not a bug.

Though if it's not symmetrical, I could see being a little miffed at it.

I have no way to judge nothin'.

It looks gorgeous to me! I will be showing the spawn the pictures, as they like nifty socks.

By way of jalapenos, never make love to a man who has been eating hot peppers. Or let him touch you with his hands. I know we've discussed this before, but...

Yikes!

The reason your gusset decs aren't symmetric is because you decreased so that the right-hand stitch always goes "over" the left-hand stitch. On the left side, that makes the pattern go neatly over the decrease, but on the right side it makes the jaggedy thing happen. Assuming you knit Western, you needed to do k2tog for the right decrease instead of ssk. (If you do Eastern or combined, you needed ssk on the right and k2tog on the left.)
