Here's an idea! Bush said in his speech on immigration that he'd like a way for serious, employed illegal immigrants to become citizens in a way that would let them MAKE UP for being illegal immigrants. To, y'know, pay their debt to society and stuff. Righty-ho. I respectfully submit that this is a damn fine idea. It's grand. It's the best idea that President Bush has come up during his entire tenure as the decider.

You wanna be a merkin citizen? Great. Pay for it. I'm thinking mid-five-figures. You buy a citizenship, that will make YOU a citizen of this great nation and you don't even have to learn the fucking language. Make sure you get a receipt, there, bub.

250,000 (the current family-based quota, roughly) times $50,000.00 (adjust for inflation or versus a basket of currencies) and you get 12.5 billion per year. Not bad. Add it to the border security budget. Allow for some asylees. People who are torqued about letting everyone in like in the good old days (I can see the grainy Ellis Island footage already) could pay for "scholarships".

In any case, the article I cited in my first post is typical of Becker and Posner. Posner, I think, is in the dictionary next to "homo economicus."
