May. 8th, 2004 10:49 am不思議とか神秘とかそんな非常識はまるっきり認めない人種で、まか不思議な出来事が彼らの周辺で起こるなんて、とうてい考えられなかった。
These people, the sort who could not abide mysterious, occult foolishness, could not possibly have imagined the supernatural incident taking place on the outskirts of their neighborhood. This is not a literal translation, but I think it hits the high points. The reason まか is floating, circled, in the diagram is that I don't know what the hell it is doing in the sentence. Clearly, it does something, but I don't know what and I didn't want anyone emailing me and telling me I left parts out. I didn't leave parts out. I have no idea what it does, or is for, but it's on the ruddy diagram. Structurally, the translated version is quite different from the actual sentence. A more literal (but way less readable) translation would be "Mysterious kinds-of-things, occult kinds-of-things, these foolishnesses completely not approved-of by this type of people regarding, MAKA?? supernatural incident their of-outskirts regarding happening what could not possibly have imagined." That's what I came up with for a first draft, and parts of it are because that's how my mind handles, for example, the particle で. It doesn't actually *mean* regarding, but usually it gives-information-about, sometimes a location of action, and I have found "regarding" a helpful shorthand for making sure I don't overlook the poor thing as I'm trucking along.
I swear that this book has many shorter, easier sentences. Honest. I promise. I've seen them. It just starts out a bit overwhelmingly, is all.
Also. Sunday's update will happen, but it will be late in the day because I have opera tickets and will be delayed posting.
