Aug. 16th, 2004 06:42 pmI'm working on the outline (I outline, of my own volition. I blame imprinting during my formative years.) for my vision of Utena. This isn't a particularly speedy process because eight seconds is a hell of a lot longer than you probably think it is unless you make AMVs or ride rodeo bulls for a living.
As I've discovered to my chagrin, simply having a general idea of where the thing is going to go visually and conceptually is insufficient. I *had* a general idea of where the thing was going. That was not enough. I needed a play-by-play timeline, so I'm building one.
I need to know a lot more about what people can get from video. I need to be enormously more visually aware. (Looking at anime clips in slow motion is amazingly eye-opening stuff. Everyone should try it.) I also need to get a better grip on the tools I'm using... but I think that some of that will come with pratice.
I don't feel that I have fluency in the medium. I don't *see* visual effects in my head or really understand what they can do to enhance the narrative. Right now I'm assembling footage... making the clips, sticking the clips together in a structured way. That much, I can see and do.
I suspect that avisynth will let me script effects later once I've assembled the footage. At least I think that's how it will work. I hope. Er.
I've got a couple of things I want to say with this video. It feels kind of like writing, only without words. It's... interesting. I'm not sure I could do *from scratch* composition... but I think I can manage something with cut-n-paste composition. We shall see.
