It's starting to feel more like fall now that the nights are hitting the high fifties and the humidity has dropped to where the salt actually comes out of the shaker again. Huzzah for salt! As the weather turns towards fall, my mind turns inexorably to the question of firewood. Now, long time readers have likely noticed that I haven't been mentioning much mowing-of-the-lawn this summer. That'd be because I haven't been mowing the lawn. Haven't mowed it since the end of June, as it happens. One of the benefits of living way the fuck out in the sticks is that I don't have to mow the grass, ever, if I don't want to.

Anyway, the yard situation was something of a problem when I went out to get a handle on the state of the woodpile(s) because I couldn't quite see the woodpile(s) in the yard. The yard was overgrown enough to cover fairly large heaps of wood and you're probably wondering how in the hell I can get grass to do that, but it's not exactly grass even though that's what I call it. It's herbaceous green material that I can run a mower over... and some of it gets fairly high if left alone for two months. *sigh* Anyway, in order to assess the state of the woodpile(s) and to make it easer for me to concatenate the woodpile(s) into a grand, unified woodpile, I decided to mow the lawn, such as it is. Also, I was worried that there might have been some narrow fellows in the grass, or, more likely, thick-bodied, wedge-headed snakes of the rattley persuasion in the grass and I didn't want to be out there reaching into woodpiles until I cleared away the greenery. (In the last ten years, I've seen two timber rattlers less than ten feet from my front door. Generally they leave on their own, but the encounters are still a bit disconcerting.) At this point, I'm pleased to report that I've mown a good bit of the lawn, located all of the woodpiles, raked up and removed lots of the wood bits that accompany a dumptruck load of firewood (they clunk under the mower and distract from the mowing experience, also they kill the grass if not raked up), stacked most of the logs that were already split, and organized the stuff that wasn't split. Large areas of the yard are now devoid of grass because it seems that having huge piles of wood sitting on the grass for two months isn't GOOD for the grass. (I say this as if I actually cared about the state of the yard. I do not.)

At this point, I've had my fill of productivity and am now ready to go off and blow the entire Saturday on the IRH (Insane Red Horse). Everyone please to be thinking happy thoughts about me and the IRH at Hall's end-of-summer ride extravaganza with Mules and Wagons and ATVs and Other Exciting Stuff that I'm sure the IRH will find no end of thrilling. Look for an update on that front sometime tomorrow... I hope it goes well, I really do.

I mowed today, too. Done for the month of September.

You would not believe how ecstatic I was when the small mountain of plywood that used to constitute the garage killed off half the grass in the right-of-way strip between the sidewalk and street out in front of our house. That much less to mow. Then I went and "mulched" two defunct flowerbeds by laying a bunch of surplus asphalt shingles end to end over the entire area, where they'll lay until next spring. I hope it kills everything off under there so I can plant something I want, as opposed to the prickly bushes I've been working on killing all summer.

Good luck with IRH. I'll be working on my own steed, that old Schwinn tomorrow, myself. The crank is not coming along peaceably.

Enjoy your day with the IRH, you've definitely earned it.
