I had a marvellous idea this morning upon waking, one that would solve half the world's problems before lunchtime and also, quite incidentally, make me filthy rich. It was so brilliant that I spent about half of my thinking-about-it in gleeful contemplation of what a damn good idea it was and how exceedingly smart I was to have thought of it.

Y'know, there's quite a bit of wanking one can do without using any hands at all...

By the time I woke up enough to drink coffee, the marvellous idea had thaw'd and resolved itself into dew or whatever. At this point I have absolutely no grip on what the hell the idea was or what it involved or, indeed, which half of the world's problems I was going to solve. The only thing I've left is the notion that I had a really great idea that would solve a lot of the world's problems.

Some people suggest keeping a notepad by the bed so that one's waking flights of invention can be jotted down before they disappear. I'm not sure reading things like "Urgent. Need six llamas, a blowtorch, and some brown sugar." or "If we made days twelve hours long, people could sleep all day, every other day." is an improvement over the lingering feeling of having had a marvellous idea upon waking.
