While I was driving the boy home from work today, he opined that he didn't like opera. (This was in the process of slamming my taste in music.) I asked if he had LISTENED to any opera. There was a pause. He allowed as how he didn't like the music during the opera scenes in Pretty Woman. (There were opera scenes in Pretty Woman? News to me. If someone in the audience could please limn them for me, that'd be swell.) Honestly, am I that fucking hard to read? Anyone who can't guess where I'm going to go with that kind of response please raise your hand for a beating.

Probably he's just doing this because he secretly wants someone to expose him to opera. If that's the case, this is his lucky day because I have Die Zieberflöte on CD, ready to go. It'll do him good, or at least let him hate opera having heard one. Plus, it's got all kinds of Masonic goodness. Nothing like a little conspiracy to improve an opera. Too bad he couldn't see it live -- the rendition I saw had dancing alligators, which totally sold me on the genre.

I have only seen the Magic Flute on television.

Cora's seen it in the theater though, and liked it.

He's probably not going to like the music if he can't see the spectacle as well though.

It's actually not bad as opera goes and I'm damn fond of the version I have on CD -- it came highly rec'd, and rightly so.

I also have a version of Rigoletto but I don't think he knows who Verdi is so I'd have more explaining to do. He has at least heard of Mozart.

The Pretty Woman opera is La Traviata. It's the 'dress her up and take her out part of the Pygmalion plot. After she's been 'properly schooled and now looks pretty.'

I haven't seen the movie in a long time....but I don't remember that the opera scene lasted all that long. Maybe half a song?
