Floorboards!!!

So Sibling came over and started working on the floorboards today. By which I mean all the carpet is now gone! >D The floorboards under there are SO NICE, too! Mostly shouldn't be much work to get them into good condition, too - there are a couple of dodgy bits, one where someone's put in some kind of fucked up filler in, and another where someone REALLY fucked up the sanding, so it's got marks, and didn't sand it back and fix it, so those'll have to be fixed. But still!

I helped a bit, too, with taking the carpet outside, and cleaning some stuff. If Sibling doesn't come back tomorrow I'll give it a mop as well, I think - it'll need a few to get some of the ground in dust on the edges up. Did a little bit of that when I was cleaning up the little bits of rubber underlay that got stuck to the floorboards, but I was using a scourer so it was kinda impractical to do all of it.

Still gotta clean out the heating ducts innards, they are uh. Not in great shape. But I ran out of stamina before I could do that. (Also it was like 10pm because I am SO TERRIBLE at time management, sigh.)

I did also get most of the stuff on my to-do list done, which is good. Major thing I didn't was uh. Showering. Whoops. >>;;; That can be delayed until tomorrow though! For sure! >>;;

Anyway. I didn't actually get a nap today so I've been up for like. Um. A long time. Sushi woke me up at ~9:15. Going to bed now!!!!

Bonny popped in yesterday. She had some spam email she wanted to check but mainly she was bored and she was killing time til 5 pm when she could have her cocktail. Bonny is an odd duck but a nice, odd duck. I had been out in the elbow working on the puzzle and met 'new girl' Jackie's son. He's large but his hands are massive. He reached out to shake mine and I just wanted to hold and study his - never seen anything like it. Also Hazel and John came out to chat. So I got all my neighborness done with very little effort on my part which is how I like it.

Today I have nothing. Next Monday, aqua yoga starts up again. But, today is free. USPS sent me an email of my coming postal mail and there is a letter/bill/something from the company that manages the condo. Maybe it's a refund check - hahahaha. I will need to go down and see when the mail comes.

I quit taking the allergy pills because they quit working but that was a month ago and I am so tired of my nose running so I started up again today. Fingers are crossed but I did add more Kleenex to my subscribe and save order. My ankles are being weird. They are fine right now but this weekend they were very swollen. Not my feet. Not my legs. Just my ankles. They looked like they had a tractor tire around each one. Dr. Google was baffled. Even Dr. AI was scratching his silicone on that one.

I haven't used my feet like I did last week and they are grateful. And they do not hurt. And I am happy about that. I am taking them to the podiatrist tomorrow. Along with all my shoes.

I spent way way way too much money last week. Last month. So July is going to see some cutbacks. I have the money but I don't need any more shit. I really don't and I don't have any place to put it. Even groceries. I'm working hard on eating out of the freezer this week. I'm nearly out of bread and eggs. Maybe a grocery run tomorrow after the podiatrist.

Denver Pride yesterday

Yesterday I was able to take a weekend day off of work in order for us to go to Denver Pride. (Wish it could have been the whole weekend, but alas.)

It was a nice time!

We got a slightly later start than intended, but we made it down there by about 11:00. We took the train, as usual, because no one wants to deal with parking down there. The 16th Street Mall is still torn up in spots, so the mall ride bus does some weird zigzags, and no longer goes all the way to Civic Center Park, but it still gets close.

We actually did not see any counter-protestors (often there's at least a small group screaming things at the entry lines. They may have been there earlier, but by the time we were there they were gone if so.)

It was a bit less crowded than previous years, both in terms of attendees and in terms of booths. (There were a couple stretches that were just empty, which was weird to see.) A lot fewer big corporate tents in general; still some, but fewer than previous years. More mid-sized corporate presence, "big" but local companies and organizations, rather than national ones. A few exceptions. I know that was a big thing this year, in terms of a lot of companies pulling out from doing Pride sponsorships. I'm not like, corporate pride's number one fan or anything, but it's definitely a bellwether for general social and cultural support, so... Not Great. Also not great because this is the main fundraiser for our biggest LGBTQ+ organization, and having big donors pull out from supporting it is a blow to them and their services.

However, Denver Pride had previously gotten some (kind of deserved) criticism of how corporate a lot of it had become a few years back. It may not be the case now, but a couple years ago it certainly was, and there was some reasonable complaint about how so many actually queer-owned and -operated businesses had been priced out of participating.

For the last couple years they've had a specific section set up for smaller creators, with a lower booth rental cost. It's kind of just a gay craft fair, ha. (We didn't get to that section last year, so this year we started there.)

I bought an ace pride crochet snail for Alex. It was deemed the emotional support snail.

And we got Bella a bandana.

I spent way too much on cute enamel pins (my weakness), plus stickers, and some other random stuff, like my art friends' tarot deck (which has been sold out every time I finally try to buy it), and a couple rings. I'm happy with the stuff we got, and that a lot of it was from smaller creators. Still spendier than we should have been, but oh well.

We did make a whole circuit of the park, but it's quite possible we missed some booths that were there. (It's easy to miss, when there's stuff to both sides, and fairly heavy foot traffic. It was also really hot, and we were wilting.) I know we were dehydrated, because between the two of us we finished off four large bottles of generic-brand gatorade, and neither of us needed to pee, ha.

We stayed for several hours, and headed back around 5:00 or so. The train we wanted to get home had been cancelled "due to lack of operator availability", but we only had to wait 20 minutes or so for another.

It was a nice day, we had some good conversations, and I'm glad we got to go. <3

Pokémon Go Fest 2025

I spent the past two days going more-or-less all out for Go Fest, and honestly I had a blast. I did a bunch of raids, got two shiny Zamazenta (one with the special background) and five shiny Zacian (no special backgrounds on any of these, alas), and am honestly pretty pleased with my shiny hoard overall. In addition to those, I got one of my longtime shiny wants: A shiny Pachirisu!

It's also been as hot and humid as a frog's armpit the past week or so, which made all that walking around... interesting. I did my best to stay hydrated and cool off as needed, and chugged more Gatorade than I initially anticipated, but I've come out the other side more-or-less fine. I did end up with more chafing than I expected, most of it in the usual places (only some of which I thought to apply preventative measures to, alas), and at least one surprise new place (my right underarm, just a little past my armpit region). I expect I'll need to keep those in mind for next year, alas. On the plus side, none of the chafing spots have blisters, which I am tentatively crediting my anti-sweat medication for.

Anyway, all that out of the way, I would like to announce that I've come up with the perfect nicknames for shiny versions of this weekend's legendaries:

Zamagenta and Zacyan.

It has been a long week

I'm looking forward to having tomorrow completely off work. Well, mostly. I worked Monday last week due to urgent pumpkin planting and the heat wave and I actually took a nap yesterday afternoon on the couch after lunch and didn't do all that much work after lunch. My last day off was Saturday and I spent all day at the SCA event. Sometimes the body just is done.

My plan to wake up early, work until it got really hot and then spent some time in the creek worked extremely well. I literally just change into shorts and my rubber boots and head down. The creek is extremely cold at the best of times, it's all spring fed from the mountains and mostly shaded by trees in our neck of the woods, so it cools me off quick and makes my feet nice and cold within 20 minutes of being fully submerged and they stay cold for several hours. It's fantastic.

I'm not actually sure what days we did what, but there was field prep of plowing and disking various fields in various states of ready, laying plastic (biodegradable plastic), my dad planting bare ground with the planter, and both of us planting into the plastic with the dorker planter (not sure why my dad and uncle call it the dorker, it's not the brand or anything), transplanting the giant pumpkins, irrigating and fertigating the vegetables and strawberries, and setting up the selling area for opening for raspberries and blueberries. I had employees working as well, although on the hot days, I sent them home at noon. The 14 year old forgot his water bottle on tuesday, so I gave him two from the cooler that we sell, told him to take at least a five minute break in the shade every hour and take another water bottle when he walked home. He was mostly weeding things. I had my other employee using the cultivating tractor, weed wacking the deer fencing. I started setting up the deer fencing in the strawberry field by the house since the deer are eating it, just need to buy handles when I go to town tomorrow and I'll have it up and electrified by Tuesday. And we opened for raspberry and blueberry picking. One of the hot days, I drank six bottles of water by 2pm, two of which had added electrolytes. Sweated most of it out. There was a breeze that day, so it wasn't fully torture. Just mostly.

We got so much done this week holy shit. I did other stuff too. And so did my parents. They had their first event in the church this weekend, so we spent a lot of time whipping that into shape. I feel back to full normal after being sick thankfully.

The urgent stuff is all done, so I spent some time this morning doing less urgent stuff. Weeding the raspberries, primarily the new patch to help keep the perennial weed problems down. And cleaning up the elderberry planting. It's definitely in rough shape, we probably won't have much of a harvest at all. They're european elderberries and a bunch of them have died, so we'll replace them with american elderberries which seem to thrive locally anyway. They're in the rockiest part of the farm as well, so it's good to have something perennial there. My dad and I talked about expanding the planting because there's so much interest in them, so that will be on the list for next spring. Shouldn't be too hard, all the irrigation is set up already, just would need to place landscape fabric and plant them in. A lot of the small crops have suffered for lack of attention. I've been working on the kiwiberries every time I'm nearby them and I trained the first canes perpendicular across the trellis the other day. Exciting!

I've spent some time contemplating my social life or lack of. All the things I would do to make friends, volunteer, meetup groups, etc rely on a more consistent schedule than I can manage right now. To be fair, I have social things three nights a week right now, monday crafting, tuesday video games with sibs, saturday watching baking with J but those are all online. I need to do some things in person. I've texted one person who I've met up with inconsistently the last few years who lives locally, originally one of J's friends but we've chatted a bunch now and it's been enjoyable. Last year was so chaotic that I failed to meet up with her, so I apologized for that in the text. There's a Wed afternoon knitting group at the local library, but unless it's raining, I can't make that, especially with employees working. My dad usually has computer work Tues and Wed, so I have to be supervisor to workers. I should aim to find something going on Thursday or Friday nights since I now don't have employees working that late (high school kids worked after school this spring and early summer so my evenings were busy). The SCA stuff is shaping up to be good but only if I can commit to going to things, there's another event this Saturday that I was hoping to go to, but we're open all day sat for picking and it looks like it'll be sunny.

But I'm the most content I think I've ever felt in my whole life. It's wild how solid I feel even with all of the irritation of my parents not moving out yet. I'm not anxious. I'm not worrying. I'm enjoying the work and the days are long but they don't feel that long. Some of that might be the testosterone and the joy I'm feeling from it. Some of it might be the work. It's just nice to be out doing physical work without the driving from previous jobs. So fun! I get to move and look at the beautiful views and the neat stuff on the farm. All the lilies are blooming right now! Growing things! That other people pick and enjoy! Spending time with family! I dunno. It's nice to enjoy this even while the political situation is *gestures*. did have a good convo with someone about USDA cuts to grants that help farmers, so that was a good win.

Also I just finished Emily Tesh's Incandescent while sitting here on register and I am SCREAMING, I got 2/3 of the way through and rolled my eyes a bit and THEN THE THING AHHH

I actually pmuch did as planned today! Perhaps a little more hiding from the cold in the morning than intended, but I was back from the shops by noon, so happy enough with that!

Considering rearranging my display cabinet already - not really surprising given you never know how things are going to work out until after you've done them, but kinda annoying anyway. But I think it should be good, if I can get it to work! Just gotta... actually do it. Also it'll leave me without places for a bunch of the small things, but tbh they're wasted in the display cabinet anyway, they CAN go a LOT more places, whereas bigger things? Not so much...

Baseball starts at 10:30 this morning with the Phillies game. The Mariners game is about 11:30. Yesterday, the Mariners game was on Fox with Fox broadcasters so it was the first time I have gotten to see a Mariners game all season. They lost. But, I enjoyed it.

The guy who sold me the blinds has now had plenty of time to respond to my email even if only to say there's nothing he can do. So far, I have heard crickets. He requested a review and I gave him a glowing one just after installation. Dude, I can edit that sucker. And will. I'll give him until Tuesday. The reality is, if you had told me at the first decision point that I could have these shades but I'll never be able to open my window OR I can live without shades, I would have picked what I have now. BUT I would have sure liked that discussion. Plenty of people here have shades and can open windows. Of course, I've never seen any I like as well as these but still...

It's a hot, sunny morning and I'm thanking those very shades.

Scott and Julie were very surprised that they were going to sleep in daylight and waking up in daylight. They've been to Alaska so it's not a totally foreign concept but they had not experienced it here in the lower 48.

At elbow coffee yesterday, we learned that David (Noelle's husband) is not doing well and John (Hazel's husband) has issues that sound like heart related. Joan is also, I think, deteriorating pretty quickly. She is still mentally sharp but her 93 year old body seems to be checking out. I suspect that this time next year, my neighborhood will look very different.

My friend, Martha, said she ran into Dick and Jen, who are moving into Myrna's apartment. They were actually moving some stuff in! They said they had tried to find me but I wasn't home. This was last week when we were out boosting the economy.

Today will be baseball and knitting and a great appreciation of my life. There's nothing like having people you know and trust come and see what you have and how you live and be so admiring of it all to nail down your gratitude for everything. It's the greatest thing.

I think I'll put some clothes on now and go get yesterday's mail before anyone else gets awake.

Volleyball was wild this morning. We had more players than we have had in a long time. One of our regulars who stopped coming about a year ago, was back. Apparently his doctor, in front of his wife, asked him if he was still playing volleyball and when they said 'no', his doctor told him to get back at it and his wife saw that he did. It was fun.

The on to Elbow Coffee. Not that much fun. Two of my favorite guys are not doing well medically. The daughter of one of my neighbors was there and she is a teacher with many many many complaints about how poorly teachers are paid and treated. Elbow Coffee, she thinks, is an appropriate place to share all of her feelings. (It's not.)

BUT now all of that is over. I got one of the three new pairs of shoes that I ordered and I think they might be good. I should have all three of them here before my appointment with the podiatrist and I'm taking them all with me. I want to find out which to keep and what I need to be looking for.

I have no reason to leave my apartment now today or tomorrow or really even Monday. I probably will but knowing I don't have to is luxurious.

Bit of a 'mode change' kind of day. Getting stuff set up/moved around/checked on etc since I'm now doing everything, sorta thing. I have discovered that my father packed ALL of the frozen leftovers to take with them (to Mama's surprise, too, when I texted her to check if I was just missing stuff), so I've REALLY got to shop tomorrow. I knew I probably should, but usually there's at least some pasta sauce in the freezer, and my father made beans recently so I thought some of the leftovers would be in there, but nope. All gone!

I think I'll go to the asian grocery tomorrow, since it's the weekend and the normal supermarkets will be pretty busy, and get dumplings etc. (It's in the opposite direction to the other supermarkets, so noooot a good idea to do both on the same day. Though at least it's cold enough that I wouldn't have to worry much about stuff defrosting. On the other hand, who wants to be out in that weather longer than they have to be?)

I got a call a few days ago that my friend Phoebe needed a hand-truck, did I have one.  I do, or at least M does.   Phoebe and her daughter (Luna) are moving out of a two bedroom apartment.  Luna is moving to Humboldt State University, into a dorm room. Phoebe is moving to Oakland (CA) into a studio apartment, so there is a lot of sorting out of stuff and getting rid of things.  Phoebe is not the kind of person who is comfortable loading a truck so she asked if I could come down today. Donald and I went down this morning.  Luna was good help. We talked about weight distribution and keeping fragile things safe  I packed things very tightly and showed Luna how to attach and work a ratchet strap.  We put two of them on the load.  I don't really think both were absolutely necessary, but they will keep things together a bit better.  The whole thing only took about an hour and a half.  Phoebe was happy and Luna very grateful that she didn't have to do most of it by herself.

The garden is starting, slowly to produce summer's abundance.  We have had the first two yellow summer squash.  Various cucumbers have set fruit, but nothing is even near harvest size.  That is because I got most things planted so late.  I've picked the first two larger tomatoes, Tim's Black Ruffles {Edit: I'm not at all convinced that this tomato is actual Black Ruffles, looks too smooth.  It was a pack of complimentary seed so who knows}.  The plant is in a 5 gallon bucket.  Cherry tomatoes have started to produce.  The first flowers are visible on Moon & Stars watermelon, though nothing has set yet.

Did a little cleanup in the shop today.  There is a steady stream of stuff coming from SF to Ukiah that needs to be put away -- somewhere.

And now they are on the road again

We had a lovely breakfast and a visit and a chat about their next trip here and then they got into the car and headed out.

It was really fun to have them here. They have a short list of places in the US they still want to see and those they want to revisit. And then I showed them, on the map, the route western from Charlotte through Asheville, over the mountains and then to Memphis and beyond. It's section of the country they have never seen that is very different from what they have seen. They think 2 years and that that might be their last trip.

It is 11:15 and the Pride parade is downstairs at 11:30 and I'm not going. Martha will shame me for it but I'm peopled out. I did my Pride bit for the year with the dolls.

I just want to put my feet up and knit and not talk to anyone for about a week. Or at least a day.

I do need to do a load of laundry.

Oh one interesting bit to note. Years ago, before Kripy Kreme donuts even had retail shops, you could get them in any grocery store always. Then they opened stores. I'm pretty sure, in the south, you could still get them at grocery stores, out here they have always been a shop only donut. Until now. We first found them at Walmart. I bought a box of 6. They were fabulously fresh! Then, yesterday, we were in a Target and they had them! I bought a box of 6. They were fabulously fresh! I told Scott and Julie that I have to buy a box everywhere I see them to let them know how much I approve of this third party retail scheme.

Also of note, TJ Max has some lovely clothes for fat girls. I did not know this until this week. I am now over clothed but not unhappy about it.

Julie pronounces Minneapolis Minini-apolis. It's very cute.

Sweet, sweet silence.

Anyway, nothing huge today. Slept a lot, because no one to make me get up (and also tired from yesterday). I even did some tidying! :D Also sewed a patch on my bag awww yeah :D :D :D

OK, who should be the next Bond? I’m impressed by the wide range of suggestions here. I especially liked the suggestion for Rege-Jean Page. No one mentioned Joseph Mawle, Edward Bluemel, Harry Lloyd, or Matthew Goode, though. Or Tobias Menzies!

What do you think?

TL;DR My friends came. They loved Timber Ridge. We shopped and shopped and shopped and shopped. And had a great visit. My feet are broken. I have an appointment with a new (to me) podiatrist on Tuesday. The Pride monsters were a huge hit and now it's back to dolls. My new window shades have a fatal error. Regular life resumes this afternoon.

The details.

Julie and Scott live on the South Island of New Zealand in a beautiful tiny town. They have been all over the United States in all the big cities. This tour - two months - is driving around - first Canada and then the western United States (except California).

Even in the biggest town in New Zealand, they shopping opportunities are not what they are here in the US. They just don't have the selection and they have the add on of 'shipped to small island far away' tax. So here, particularly Julie, wallows in all the choices available. The last time they were here, two years ago, they wanted to shop and, for some reason, we ended up down in Federal Way where we discovered chain shop heaven. Lovely stores of Old Navy, Skeechers, Walmart, Target, etc.

This time they wanted to go back to all those places plus they found North Bend Outlets on Google and wanted to go there.

So we started at North Bend which is not too far up the road. And a lovely drive. But the outlet mall there is a bust and a half. The stores were sparse and empty. But, they drive was lovely. And we saw other stuff.

So we came back here and toured Timber Ridge and Issaquah. They are pretty impressed with Timber Ridge. and Issaquah always presents nicely.

Tuesday we went back to Federal Way and did not miss any stores. Julie had a ball and Scott got new shoes and it was a huge hit. Wednesday, there was more shopping and we found the Issaquah troll which was way more impressive than I expected.

Yesterday, Thursday, it was into Bellevue to that huge, lovely, downtown mall. And then to the conveyor belt sushi place for lunch. Fun and delicious.

In between, we've been enjoying Timber Ridge. We've eaten in all the dining rooms and tried all the various serving options except lunch. All have been pretty impressive.

Today they leave. They are taking the next few weeks to drive from here via Salt Lake City and Yellowstone and Mt. Rushmore to Chicago where they will fly to San Francisco and then home. It's such a wonderful trip.

Meanwhile, my feet are just screaming at me. Finally, on Wednesday, I sent a note to my doctor asking for referral to a podiatrist or any other suggestion. She got right back to me with a couple of podiatrist options and I was able to get an appointment here in Issaquah for this coming Tuesday! Yeah.

Oh and it's window washing time at Timber Ridge. I have a panel of three windows. The middle one opens. They use it to hang out and wash the outside of all three panels. It's a good system. Except. When the shade guy designed and the installer guy installed, none of us realized that the scheme will completely bar me from ever opening that window again. So no cleaning. Ever. I have now sent him a note asking what he can do about it. I'm guessing nothing. And it's not fatal. But they should not have been installed that way. Weird and a little annoying.

Today is the Timber Ridge Pride parade which is just about the same time Scott and Julie were planning on leaving and will block in their car. I suspect it will be a short parade and not interrupt the leaving for long.

And now I think I'm caught up. I should get dressed and ready. They will text me when they are up and we'll meet in the dining room for breakfast.

On Monday we decided to head up toward the Pawnee National Grasslands. Back when I was in college we lived much closer, and went out there pretty often. There's a birding "trail" (it's a driving route with a handful of stops around where certain birds are frequently seen), some good scenery, and sometimes other wildlife. We were hoping to see a rattlesnake, since we often did when we were up there before, but alas.

We didn't have a terribly specific plan, beyond maybe some of the birding areas, or just anywhere that seemed interesting to pull over and check out. Part of the road for the birding route is closed, and while it seemed like you could still go through, it also headed into a fee camping area, which I do not remember from before... but it has been 15+ years since we were exploring up there, so things may simply have changed! (The website also has one stop on the birding trail crossed out, just saying "this stop has been removed" and I want to know why!)

We pulled over at one informative sign, and went on a brief walk into the grasslands. Mostly there were a ton of wildflowers! It was lovely.

Unfortunately I also got bit by a fuckoff big mosquito and some of her friends. I swatted her while she was biting me and there was a pretty gross explosion of blood. Uuuuugh.

A beeplant! Actually mostly being visited by ants. With a photobomb from a little tiny wasp or some sort coming in from the lower right.

I took more cactus flower pictures than anything else, ha.

Ten more pictures:

Globemallow again!

A mystery fungal pod. (Probably some sort of small puffball?)

A lone prickly pear.

Asters.

I just really love prickly pear flowers! The petals are so delicate looking for something so stabby.

More prickly pear flowers. With bonus bug friends.

Not sure what these are, but they looked neat.

Seems like we'd just missed whatever these were blooming.

One more cactus flower picture!

We did drive one stretch of the birding route, and we did see quite a few birds! Lark buntings, horned larks, a few I couldn't quite identify... of course they mostly flew off as soon as the car was close, haha.

But...

One lark bunting, I swear! (On the top fence wire.) Lark buntings are the state bird of Colorado, but I only ever see them up on the plains here.
