Feb. 12th, 2005 06:54 pmEarly productivity ground to a screeching halt as I watched Boondock Saints three times through to see things. As
insidian promised, there were things to see. Extras... I about bust a gut. Yep, them's some damn slashy extras. A bag of ice? *snarf* I also used pause button to great effect, Il Duce apparently found previous employment in the welcoming arms of the IRA, not that this should come as a surprise. And yeah, where they tried to fix the wall after the cat incident. And I finally get why they call Rocco "Jaffar". It's his bellhop nametag. And I got the FBI guy drinking in a gay bar when he insults the bartender for being a fag. Damn. He's so pretty. It's a very entertaining film, it is.
insidian was right -- this film is a great deal more entertaining than it has any right to be.
And now I must fix dinner and watch Gangs of New York because I want there to be more violence in my day. So that we're all on the same page, I'm not even remotely watching for that DeCaprio fellow. Leonardo DiCaprio is an entirely uninteresting callow youth of extreme unfuckability and I have never found him hawt. The hottie in Gangs is Daniel Day-Lewis. He's a fucking delightful psychopath and I love the way his body moves. He's kind of anorexically elegant, if you know what I mean. If he were paler, he'd make a great goth. Plus, y'know, it's got aesthetic, lovingly-rendered violence. Hooray!

Eh? I mean, duh, of course, but what was the tip off for you? I missed it! Also, Duce's a huge Steve McQueen fan. His hand butterfly? Papillon, all the way.
RE: Gangs & Daniel & He Who Is Uninterestingly Callow
Yes to all you said, and the only other thing I remember about the movie is the soundtrack, which I rather enjoyed.

Date: 2005-02-14 02:51 pm (UTC)Who do you know who'd think that the Soggy Bottom Boys are a joke? Other than the fact that they sort of are, in an arch Coen Brothers sort of way. But the song's real enough...

Date: 2005-02-14 03:58 pm (UTC)What I will let pass as aesthetically satisfying in entertainment media is different from what I'll go for in real life... and I have pretty good mechanisms for enjoying things in entertainment media that would raise red flags all over the place if it were 'real'. (If I ever get around to deconstructing my porn, we'll get to see that in spades. I have to first find a good mechanism for photographing said porn. This is nontrivial. I want all the pages to be the same size. It's a thing. I'm working on it. No, I don't have a scanner. No, I don't know anyone who has a flat plate scanner to whom I wish to disclose my porn.)
I freely admit that Gangs has weak points all over the place, but I forgive it for having good violence, good Day-Lewis, and good period costumes. (I adore dress-up movies.) Hollywood doesn't seem to make movies that I can like wholeheartedly and without reservation, so I've gotten to the point where I like the parts I like and mostly forgive or overlook the parts I don't like.
*sigh* On the music notes -- while I do not ever list a song that I don't own and that is not actually playing when I write whatever post I am writing, I will admit to the occasional careful selection of music that goes nicely with the post at hand. It's a thing. You're not required to notice this and really, it's only something that I do because it amuses me. Other people are not expected to understand. There will not be a quiz and you won't see this material on the final.
In this particular case, I was amused by the band name, which I interpreted as, well, more in line with the common noun santorum than with any landscape feature. Given the extremely slashy nature of Saints and, as it happens, Gangs, this struck me as exceptionally funny. I never claimed to have an erudite sense of humor. Sometimes -- most of the time -- the best I can do is potty humor.
Also, I am a Man of Constant Sorrow kind of fits with the nature of what the Saints do for a living as well as what our man Bill does for a living. Both of 'em are drawn as kind of tragic figures, guys who are out there violently and murderously enforcing what they think is right, as if they're on a mission from God (I didn't have any music from Blues Brothers handy) but you don't get the feeling it makes them very damn happy. They are men of constant sorrows.
It made sense to me.
