Yeah that would likely be my approach as well - if there was a horse that had no problem with it, it should lead. With Sunshine, I could've also just gone by foot, if there was no fitting buddy around, because I could lead her over/past many things while walking beside her. And funnily enough, she often was quite cool with stuff where everyone would think it must be super weird or scary for a horse. She was a German riding Pony, but there was a lot of Arabian in her as well from her mother's side. It showed. XD
My mother's horse... ehh. He would've followed if Sunshine went. XD
