My cousin and my brother and my aunt and I go to two local trivia events in February. One is in Everett, where I attended high school, and one is in Claysburg. This year we lost badly, so badly, like we weren't even in the top three at Everett. We sucked. It was horrible. While we are typically good at trivia, we are NOT GOOD at ... pop culture, songs played backwards, and celebrity faces in their first movie roles. Ugh.

So after that humiliating effort (we'd won the previous three years), we headed up to Claysburg Trivia Night with less-than-optimistic hearts.

Claysburg Trivia Night, which I have discussed here previously, is a wonderful night out in Claysburg with a darn good firehall turkey dinner plus snacks plus desserts plus beers (They had CORONA this year!!! I got some for me and Heather because she has booked a cruise for her family and doesn't want to hear me talk about Corona virus even though I sold my Roth IRA SPY shares on 2-20-2020 and thus DID NOT lose $9000 in the market this past week, go me. Waitin' for them to go on sale afore I buy back in, you betcha.) plus ripoff tickets and a 50-50 and of course forty-eight excellent trivia questions.

You get snacks and beers and the dinner before the trivia starts.

Round 1:

1. What group's national honor society is named The Order of the Arrow?

12. Daniel Libeskind became famous in 2003 for his design to reconstruct what?

We missed 2 and 8. Questions were two points each.

At the end of round 2, we were in 6th place with a score of 29, behind Beauties and the Beast (34), Murder of Crows (33), Hillbilly Deluxe (31), Intelligent Donkeys (30), Dot & Merle's Kin (30 and also winner the last two years in a row).

Round 3, questions also two points each.

12. What major league sports team is owned by Shark Tank's Mark Cuban?

We missed 1 & 2. At the end of the round, we were second behind Beauties & the Beast (50 points), we had 49 points. Dot & Merle's Kin had 48 points, Minds of Mayhem had 47, Miller Deuh (not sure on spelling) had 45 as did Murder of Crows.

Round 4 questions are worth three points each.

1. Which amendment allowed federal income tax?
2. Most decorated soldier in WWii, played himself in To Hell And Back
3. In James and the Giant Peach, the peach ends up impaled on what?

10. What slave name is Kunta Kinte forced to adopt in the novel Roots?
11. What does Mir (name of Russian Space Station) mean?
12. The 3 Schuyler sisters from Hamilton, name two.

We missed 1, 5, and 11. Murder of Crows won the round with 10 correct. Everyone else, then, scored a maximum of 9 correct for 27 points. We knew that we had gotten three wrong. (We may not know the answers but we also generally know we don't know them.) Murder of Crows had 75 points, which was the score to beat. IF we were the next-best with 9 correct (and we were pretty sure we had 9 correct), then we were in the money.

placings:

10 -- Outgunned & outmatched 51
9 -- Minds of Mayhem 56
8 -- Leapin' Lizards 59
7 -- to be determined 59
(they do tiebreakers but only if it's in the money)
6 -- Intelligent Donkeys 60
5 -- Miller Deuh 63
4 -- Beauty and the Beasts 65
3 -- Dot & Merle's Kin 66
2 -- Murder of Crows 75
1 -- Dead Parrots with 76

We got $150 for winning and also $25 for winning round 3 in a tiebreaker wherein my aunt Jackie had the correct answer for When was Steamboat Willie.

This was somewhat gratifying following our fucking humiliating total loss in Everett Trivia. But notice, no backwards music and no celebrity faces. We can do trivia, just not that kind.

Some of the teams have t-shirts with their names and logos on them. We don't have that. Perhaps we should have that. I feel like it could be a thing.
