which_chickI am a landlord. I am a SMALL landlord. My tenants have an "emergency number" that (via the magic of call forwarding) rings at my actual home landline. My tenants do not have my cellphone number because I am entitled to a personal life and because there are like fifty of them and there is only one of me.
Since this is an "emergency number" for fifty people living in property I am responsible for, when the phone rings I fucking well answer it. I answer it at 3:00 AM and I answer it on weekends and I answer it when I'm having sex. I answer the fucking phone if I am home, regardless of the time it rings or the inconvenience caused.
First off, it's my damn job.
Second, when my landline rings at odd hours, it is usually An Actual Emergency (water won't shut off, there is no heat, flooding, broken pipe, sewer is not working, etc.) that needs fairly prompt attention from a person of the landlording persuasion and that person is me. Mostly, tenants are pretty solid on what "emergencies only" mean and they generally only call when they have an actual emergency.
But sometimes, when my landline rings at, say, 10:20 PM on a Thursday night, it is someone going "Wow, I didn't think you would answer the phone!" (To which I helpfully DID NOT REPLY Then why the fuck did you call me???) and then asking me about apartments for rent.
No dice. Oh, hell no. The number you just fucking called is given only to my tenants and it says EMERGENCIES ONLY in big print right above it.
If you think for one red hot minute that I'm going to interrupt Criminal Minds season 6 Episode 23 to tell you about an apartment for rent at TEN FUCKING THIRTY AT NIGHT DURING MY PRIVATE TIME WHEN I AM OFF THE CLOCK AND YOU ARE NOT A TENANT HAVING AN EMERGENCY, you are remarkably unclear on what the fuck EMERGENCIES ONLY means.
"I'm sorry. This number is for tenant emergencies only. If you are interested in renting an apartment please call my office -- we're open 8 AM to 4 PM tomorrow and the number is as follows..."
*sigh*
Also who the fucking fuck thinks it's okay to call someone you do not know at 10:20PM on a weeknight? MANNERS. DO PEOPLE HAVE MANNERS ANYMORE?
