I got my calendar of french rugby players today. It is definitely thirty-odd dollars of entertainment, so we're scoring this as a win. As I said the first time 'round, this thing features lovely pictures of relatively unclothed rugby (and a few football, by which I think they mean soccer) players. I was amused to discover that they give me a new picture every two weeks instead of every month. I'm not complaining about that, mind.

In terms of graphic design... I had to laugh when I flipped the calendar open. I had to. I looked at the first page, which features a perfectly lovely young man holding a rugby ovid and looking at the camera like he's cruising it, and the laughter bubbled up out of me like an underground spring seeking the surface. I wasn't laughing at the guy. He's quite pretty. I was laughing because this thing is only nominally a calendar. I admit that it *says* it's a calendar, but to the right of this paragraph is the layout of the damn thing. The green area at the top is the days and the name of the guy in question. The larger, purple area underneath is the picture of the guy. The white space is, well, white space. (Illustration is done to scale, using actual measurements -- one inch equals ten pixels.) It's the unexpected delights, like the entirely shameless layout of the tastefully-nude french rugby player calendar, that make life worth living.
