As all ya'll are aware, I am watching The Vampire Diaries. In Episode 12, they're having a fifties dance at the school. The music at the dance... it is problematic.
They start with This Magic Moment, not by Ben E. King and the Drifters (from 1960) and not by Jay and the Americans (from 1969). It's another version, by someone else. More *modern*. And, y'know, that sux0r because it's not the original artist (In my world, it's the Ben E. King version that is canonical.) besides not being from the fifties in any way, shape, or form.
The next song I catch is Everyday which was a 1957 song by Buddy Holly (the B side to Peggy Sue), so period correct, but the dude they have singing it is totally not Buddy Holly. Damn it. Is there something *wrong* with having it by Buddy Holly? I LIKE Imp y Celyn, I do.
After that is some sappy shit about I'll be wishing every day for you which is a song I can't place or google. Lyrics are hard to hear and I have nothing there.
And then they play Del Shannon's Runaway, only it's a remake and not the version by Del Shannon. Damn, this pisses me off. Are we on a budget here that we can't freaking afford the real Runaway? Is that why we have The Wrong Versions all over the place, poor and pathetic remakes that sound like fingernails on a chalkboard? Also, that song was from 1961 and is thus not particularly period-correct for a fifties dance ANYWAY. Argh.
Next one is something with the lyric It's a slow dance, baby but I can't pull jack for that, either.
That segues (abruptly) into a Great Balls of Fire that is not the one done by Jerry Lee, damn it all. Why, say I, the hell not? Jerry Lee Lewis is the canonical singer of Great Balls of Fire. Anything else is not optimal but at least the tune is from 1957.
And so then they do My Boyfriend's Back but not the version by The Angels. It's some fuck-all asstastic remake of a song from 19-fucking-63. FUCKING SHIT, people, did anyone even LOOK at this playlist before they OK'd it?
They wrap the episode with Mr. Sandman (Not by The Chordettes, which hardly needs saying) but at least the song is from 1954 and thus is thematically appropriate.
Look, people, you can't have a FIFTIES dance when you're playing music from the SIXTIES. You just can't. Asshats.
Am I working too hard at my vampire television?
As a side note: Am I missing my calling by not belonging to the SCA or an historical re-enactment group of some sort? I think that's the sort of endeavour where I could reallypiss people off shine.
