So I'm making sticky buns* and realizing once again how very much I hate making them.

*Nothing to do with gay porn. Not that sort of thing at all. Sticky buns are a pastry food item called "cinnamon rolls" by People-Who-Are-Not-My-People. They involve cinnamon, brown sugar, butter, and walnuts.



Now, I like making other sorts of pastry. I like pie. I like pie crust, eating and making and lording the quality of mine over other people. I have made puff pastry at home. Eclairs hold no mysteries for me. The only reason I haven't buckled down and started learning about croissants is that I don't honestly need to be eating the fruits of my labors. However, I do not like making sticky buns. Hell, I don't really like eating them, either. I'll have a few, but they are totally not a sneak another one when nobody is looking food item for me. I can be polite about sticky buns.

So, why am I fucking around making sticky buns which I don't particularly adore? Well, Bethie wants 'em. Rather a while back (time span measured in years), following the delivery of some food item or another to the horse people, Bethie asked if I could make "cinnamon rolls". After a brief discussion detailing exactly what the hell a "cinnamon roll" was, I allowed as how I could. She said that all the other stuff I made was totally very well and good but honestly, she'd really, really like some cinnamon rolls. *sigh* There's no accounting for taste. So, I told her that I would make her some, one of these days. (Bethie is not a horse people. She is Trysta's friend, Trysta being of the horse people. Bethie is there a lot, though, and so she's eaten a fair amount of my cooking over the ages. She also used to babysit for Josh and Karen back when they lived at Davidson Street, a tidbit that may help some readers place her.)

Along the way from when I promised to make sticky buns and now, Bethie has occasionally raised the issue of when, when, when. However, she's done it very politely and not very often. (She's a lot more patient than I am, or maybe she didn't figure I was serious on the sticky bun front.) It's way past time that I should make good on my offer of sticky buns, so I am.

Oh! I was wondering what embarrassing thing you could be calling them that was not FB-worthy. They're just sticky buns! Grandma made those.

(Pause for moment of silence for Grandma and her industrial-strength cooking.)

Wait, hers had raisins and were not noticeably cinnamony. Had walnuts on the bottom, though. I think honey figured into it.

No raisins. Definite cinnamon flavor. The pans have brown sugar, butter, and walnuts in the bottoms, but as you tip the pan out so that what was the bottom becomes the top, the walnuts end up on top. No honey at all.

Have you tried turning your oven on briefly and letting them rise in there? Also, I got a recipe for pretzel knot rolls that may be right up your alley.

I have heard of that but I worry I'd roast the poor guys by forgetting to shut the oven off. I do turn the oven on and then set them on the stovetop, which gets warm but not hot.

Anyway, they're done. I'll be dropping some off at Chez You later today.
