So, how's that manga thing going? The one with no sex in it. That one.

This is... wow. It's fun. It's fun for 1-4. It is *more* fun in 5 and 6 because of more plotly goodness. I also liked the handcuff bit. All of that was good, solid fun until I got to 7, in which Death Note knocked me ass over tin cup. Completely. Totally ass-over-tin-cup. Dayum. (Mad propz, of course, for being entertainment media able to do that to me. It's not a horribly frequent happening.) Okay, I figured there was a plan when Light gave over at the end of Volume 4. There had to be a plan because he's a bright lad indeed and he would totally not have done something like that giving over without a plan in place. Planning is key for our man Light. Planning and a little megalomania, of course.

Part of what makes the thing fly like an unhooded hawk in volume 7 is that we have to wait through two volumes of waiting (okay, it's entertaining and plotly waiting, but it is *still* waiting) to find out what the plan is. By the time we get to the grand reveal of the plan, we are entirely ready, hell, past ready, to hear about it. And fuck it all, it's one beaut of a plan in which (in this totally sex-free manga) Light screws everyone. Yep. They've sold me on this. The plan is revealed in pages and pages of cackle-worthy reveals on the "I'm so clever" front and you know it's fucking working when I sit there, jaw drop after jaw drop going Holy cow, he's that damn thorough?!? (I am a sucker for this sort of thing when it's done well. Gambit may not work for all readers.) I was sort of upset about that one thing because I was fond... fond... but wow. So nicely done. And, y'know, we'll be getting a replacement because Go is a two-player game.

I'm told that they are making this into an anime. I'm not sure how that'll work because at least half of the airtime will be stills of Light (or Ryuzaki) sitting there and thinking to himself in an interior monologue of twisty little passages, all alike. It makes for great reading but it may not make for great anime. We shall see, though.

I still haven't checked out Deathnote. Nor have I seen the live action movie yet. A pity.

Wow, this sounds like I need it. To keep and read in 10 years, anyway.

You could also just wait until I buy the remaining (not-very-many) volumes and then borrow it from me for long-term storage. That'd be way cheaper, with the same end result.
