I stayed up late last night and made pies for the Hallowe'en party in Philly later today. They came out okay, I think. I'll be spending the night at the Philly people's house and then visiting with Brother-the-younger on the following day. Brother-the-younger lives kind of near York, which is on the way home from Philly. There's a convenience factor and it breaks up the (boring-as-hell) drive.

Brother-the-younger wants firewood, which I reckon I can put in the trunk of my car. (I'm not using the word reckon to be egregiously folksy. I actually talk like that. Another one of my not-on-purpose redneckisms is allow as in, "I allowed as how that was a possibility". If there's egregious folksy action going on, it's not on purpose.) Obviously, it's not going to be TONS of firewood because I have a Cavalier, but it's going to be some. (How can I haul firewood in the trunk of my Cavalier? Easy. It's ten years old and has more than a hundred and fifty thousand miles on the odometer. It's not like it's *worth* anything at this point and I don't think firewood is going to shit it up all that badly. The only other thing I put in the trunk is my horse gear anyway.)

Now, I could drive the work-truck to Philly (it's got a CD player, so bonus on that front) but I'm not feeling very motivated there. See, it would look really cheesy if I took the pickup with like two arms of wood in the back. For things to look proper, I'd have to fill the damn truck up -- and it's grey and damp and unpleasant out there this morning. I'm not feeling very motivated. So, no for the work truck. My own personal huge green truck has uncomfortable bench seats (it's a three-hour drive to Philly, comfort matters) AND there's no cd player AND that truck has more carrying capacity than the work truck so I'd need to put even more wood in it. Also, it drinks gasoline like a 3/4 ton pickup because that's what it is. I'm not seeing a win there, either, so the Cavalier it is.

It is entirely likely that if the day had ydawned ybright and yclere, brother-the-younger would be getting much more firewood than he is actually going to get. I'll be visiting him again around Thanksgiving, though, and I'll see if I can do a better job of it then. That'll be nicer anyway because I won't have to haul the damn wood to Philly first before I get to his house AND I can make him unload it after Thanksgiving dinner. :) Yay!

Since this is the semi-annual pilgrimage to Philadelphia, I will also be taking along seasonal presents for the hosts. They get preserves, which are (this year) grape stuff and peach stuff. The grape is the new, impressively bitter grape that I so like. I don't know if they'll like it or not. The peach is the same peach as before only slightly thicker because I didn't get bored with cooking it down this year.

I'll also be taking along the HoHI socks, mostly for show-n-tell. Once enough people get there, I won't be able to get any work done on them because I can't talk and work on them at the same time.

Last time we looked at the socks, they were here:

Now they are here:

I'm getting there. In the last trying-on, they didn't seem quite ready for the decreases to start yet even though I have 4 1/4 inches of sock at this point. More contemplation is needed, I think. Also, I think I want more ribbing at the top. It is rather late in the game to be thinking that so I'm trying to come to terms with how much ribbing there is.
