I didn't have a very interesting day at work today. I painted some and I cleaned floors and a bathroom and a kitchen. I fixed the latch for the basement door. I've about decided that the lemon-flavor oven cleaner is more palatable than the plain and I don't know why. It's not like it's a very *good* lemon flavor. Any way you slice it, it's corrosive nasty shit that will eat through your skin if you let it touch you for too long and breathing it... ick. Ick, I say. But I like the lemon flavor better than the plain.

I'm finally upgrading my WinAmp because I'm fucking tired of it telling me that newer versions are available. I was running 5.02 from 2004 and probably it was time to upgrade. I just... all those features? What do I need those for? I'm on dialup, here. I got the lite boring version that doesn't do anything but fucking play .mp3 files. I don't want to watch videos with my winamp. I already have other, better tools for watching, editing, ripping, and burning video.

People who make softwares! Jack of all trades, master of none is not a goal for your program. PEOPLE are generalists. Software should do one thing and do it well instead of doing a lot of stuff crappily. Feature creep is NOT A GOOD THING. Bigger is not better. Emacs is NOT a good example of software. Try not to get carried away. Just because you *can* make your program do X does not mean you HAVE to make your program do X.

The hat is cast on and does not appear to be twisted. I'll be working on it more this evening because I'd like to knock it out here directly so that I can get to the Hooves of Hot Iron. I wish I had more of an idea how to make the crown of the hat happily rounded like a cloche hat is supposed to be, but I'm not having much luck turning up a free pattern that gives me the information I want. Stupid internets. Anyone who knows how to make a nicely round crown on a hat by something like R1, k5, k2tog; R2, k4, k2tog; R3 k3, k2tog... now might be a good time to share that clue because otherwise I'm heading off-road into experimental knitting and we all know how well that works. (Surprisingly, is how well it works.)

Oh, and just a thought. Knitting patterns? They're written in a programming language that's supposed-to-be line-by-line interpreted. I do not LIKE doing things on a line-by-line basis. I enjoy knowing what is going to happen next. I like a big-picture view. Part of my problem with knitting instructions is that I read 'em first and then generate instructions that I like better (which, while more aesthetically appealing to me, may not map one-to-one onto the AS-WRITTEN instructions) and then I go do the aesthetically appealing instructions instead of the as-written ones. Not a geek. Not a geek. Not a geek. (If I tell you three times, that makes it true... or at least obvious that I'm in denial.) Interestingly, the knitting instructions for the Hooves of Hot Iron appear to be more like guidelines. Maybe I will be able to actually follow them...

Finally, I note with interest that [livejournal.com profile] sector_r, the one to whom [livejournal.com profile] cousin_sue is a cousin, has made the leap into LJ goodness. Welcome! I friended you so that you can enjoy (I use the term loosely) all the flocked posts where I bitch about my family since my prose is so very arresting that you'll read every word with bated breath and hit refresh over and over to see if I've posted anything new since the last time you hit refresh. :)
