Aug. 27th, 2006 11:44 amAlso yesterday, I took Phantom out for a spin. Liss came with me on Mai Tai. (She's been riding Tai for at least twenty-five years.) Tai's mostly in retirement these days but she can still do easy, short rides and makes a good calming presence for young horses. That went pretty well, really. After that, Galen showed up and we took his stud (Now three years old. Where *does* the time go?) out of the field and worked him a bit on a lead because he's got no damn ground manners and walks all over people. That's what they told me, anyway. I didn't see it at all, but what the hell do I know? (He wasn't any worse than Thyme, for example.)
Now, I don't like or trust stud horses, but Kaz was really quite sensible for his age and hormones. He learned pretty quickly and paid attention as well as any three-year-old horse does. It's raining today, or we'd be doing more of the same... right now, it's me working the horse and Galen watching the working of the horse with my fine running commentary. I'd have him working the horse except it's a bitch to teach the person AND the horse at the same time. (It's a lot easier if at least one mind knows what the heck is going on.) The reason I was doing all of this was because Liss thought that I ought to teach Galen about the whole groundwork thing so that his stud horse doesn't keep walking all over him. I wasn't really very enthused -- there's so damn much material involved in teaching someone how to do this -- but I figured I'd give it a try if for no other reason than to shut her up. Also, if it works, it'll give Galen's stud something to do besides running the fence in his field and chatting up mares.
Anyway, the rain put a damper on my plans so instead I made another peach pie to take in to Heather & co., who had requested a pie last time I stopped in over there. It's cooling on the counter at the moment. I still like the lard thing.
