I was at my chiro today (she's in her twenties) and I mentioned to her that I'd just discovered that if a body were to hie themselves across the street and get a library card to the Everett Free Library (my local establishment of library, here in Greater Rednecklandia), then a person so inclined could borrow digital books from the library on their phone like for Kindle only THE BOOKS ARE FREE.

Chiro looked, as near as I could tell, fucking gobsmacked. "You're shitting me." Nope, not shitting you. I explained how Digital Library On My Phone was better than traditional library experience because...

1. Don't have to talk to anyone. Ever. The app doesn't judge you for reading slush science fiction novels and nothing highbrow. Or Scottish kilt bodice rippers. Or whatever. The App Does Not Judge.

2. Can do it from bed at 3 AM if having insomnia. Digital library always open, not stupidly closed on Wednesdays or at the aforementioned 3 AM or anything like that.

3. Books check out for two weeks and magically disappear when expired. No late fees. Don't have to remember to return them. (I do hit "return" when done because I am typically done well before two weeks expire. It's polite.)

4. Book cannot be damaged as it is just electrons or whatever on my phone. Also, lightweight, portable, and looks like EVERY OTHER BOOK ON MY PHONE so I don't have other people on the train (I don't ride a train but you know what I mean) judging my books by their covers. They don't have covers. They are anonymous books.

5. If one is interested, there's also audiobooks which proceed way too slowly for me but might work for others. I don't see the point of audiobooks and they put me to sleep.

Chiro was... "Show me the app. I like my kindle app. Is it like the kindle app or does it suck?"

And I'm like, my friend Lala said the early library app sucked but the current one is very nice and almost exactly like Kindle to use and it's definitely worth looking at, see here...

And I demo'd the app for her. (My library uses the cloudLibrary app.) When I signed up, the librarian was "Do you need help installing and learning to use the app?" (I have grey hair) and I was "Lolnope, I am tech-capable". It was absolutely straightforward and easy.

Guess who is going to get a library card tomorrowThursday? :)

So, if you somehow didn't know that you could (a) read books on your smartphone and (b) read books FOR FREE on your smartphone using your local public library membership which they will happily sign you up for... now you know. It doesn't suck. First time I've had a fucking library card since the early 1980's.

Hot n Spicy, again. I think there are probably like five kinds of cheese repeated five times each. That is my current theory. Also, why no swiss?
