Visited grandma and read about another chapter of Memoirs of a Geisha to her. Chiyo-chan is now officially Mameha's little sister and has taken on her official geisha name of Sayuri. There still aren't any sex parts to speak of and I'm sort of getting the general impression that this is not a book one reads for the s3x0r. *sigh* I'm told that today was Americans Read Aloud To Defeat the Red Menace Day or something along those lines, so me reading aloud today was more patriotic than it is on other days. It didn't feel any different, though.

Do we even have a Red Menace anymore?

In unrelated news, I got the first two volumes of Antique Bakery (English translation) today. Man, is that amusing. I've read one (though not aloud) and will likely plow through the second before bedtime. It's pretty. It's fluffy. I could do with some pretty and fluffy these days.

Finally, I rented TA 4 today to people who have two young sons. One of the sons has a normal name. I don't recall what it was -- possibly Jared or something. The other son, age four, was named Trunks. That was his given name, not a nickname or anything -- I asked. Apparently his father named him... and they nodded, relieved, when I said "DragonballZ?"

Yes indeed! There is a Red Menace!

It is called Ignorance, prejudice, and fear, and it *can* be combatted by reading out loud to people.

The s3x bits in you book are pretty much enough to turn you off from sex. Sorry. Not attractive at all. Kind of sad.

Names like that should probably count as child abuse, dammit.

Y'know, I read on the OtaBoards last year where someone was naming their kid Sephiroth. And I thought, okay, that's taking your fandom a bit too far, but at least a name like that can be shortened to a harmless nickname. That kid probably won't get picked on too much. No more than I was for my middle name of Aloysius, anyway. :)

But... Trunks?

That kid's going to be in school next year. And despite the best efforts of several philanthropic organizations, DBZ will still be on TV at that time. There are going to be entire psychiatric case studies springing fully-grown from that poor kid's head in about 15 years.

Eh, you can pass "Sephiroth" off as mysterious and Kabbalesque. It might even get your kid a future "in" with hot goth chicks. Trunks is just... unutterably fanboy. If that kid knows what's good for him, he's going to get himself a nickname like Whitley or Brentley or Winfield, something just WASPy enough to pass, and lame enough that no-one would ever suspect that it's a cover for deranged fanboy paternity. And get it officially changed as soon as he's of age.

Of course there's a Red Menace. It does most of its menacing by ripping off European tourists & giving sketchy Canadians nasty venereal diseases, but Cuba's still south of Florida. It's a less *serious* menace since it stopped exporting mercenaries to Africa & started importing sex tourists from the second world, but you know, still evil. For relatively minor values of "evil".

Trunks, eh? That's so very, very, very sad on so many levels. In any case, Trunks was a bratty little punkass. If I'd been Vegeta, I'd have smacked that purple-haired bairn at least as far as King Kai's place. Bloomers becoming anybody's mom was a recipe for disaster!
