which_chickMy brother Joe emailed today to say that he thinks his (wife's) impending baby will be here sometime in August rather than September 10, as projected. That's a level of detail I can live with. Keeping the family informed, and this is all to the good.
So then my mother emails me to tell me about centimeters dialated and membrane scraping... and y'know, if I had that damn much interest in viviparous reproduction, you can bet your ass I'd have signed up for it by now. It's ghastly. The whole entire process is a great big huge ginormous squick to me and I don't really want to know any more about the gory details than I absolutely have to. My mother's level of involvement in the processes taking place in Stacey's snatch strikes me as extreme. I mean, yeah, I know she wants another grandchild, but I kind of get the impression that if she thought she could knock up Stacey faster and more effectively than Joe, she'd be chasing after that girl with a turkey baster. *sigh*
Besides the TMI issue, I figure Joe and Stacey are entitled to a certain amount of privacy regarding their reproductive plans. Induced labor, regular labor, c-section (their first kid was an emergency c-section), miscarriages (if any), number of intended children, difficulties or not in achieving a pregnant wife, preferred gender of child, the reason they keep giving them names I would not personally vote for, whatever. None of that is my business. It's their business. I trust that they will make the best decisions that they know how to and if they want my opinion, they are certainly welcome to ask me for it. Life is hard enough for a modern married couple with two careers (they're both lawyers) and a three-year-old toddler... they don't need to be defending themselves from family members asking aggressive and intrusive questions about their reproductive lives.
