which_chickI have been thinking about The Untamed a lot, because, well, yeah. I've been overthinking my media since about 1986, when I was reading A Separate Peace for school and thinking... "Is Gene, like, hot for Finny?"
The potential homoeroticism of John Knowles's novel was not a topic for discussion in that time and at that place because in small town Greater Rednecklandia in 1986 (We can't even get Cable TV here, Stacy!), we were kinda sure that Liberace was maybe gay. Possibly Elton John. Rock Hudson, because he died of AIDS the prior fall. Potentially Boy George, who wore more eye makeup than we felt straight dudes should wear. But definitely not anybody else. Not Rob Halford (definitely gay) or Freddie Mercury (definitely gay) or any other famous people that we might have known. Look, it was a different time. And yet still, reading the damn book, in my little heart of hearts, I was "Is Gene, like, hot for Finny?"
'Cause it sure seemed like he was.
But I digress.
