Dressage scoring says it is officially giving out scores from 0 to 10. It's right there on the "About Dressage" page at USDF. (United States Dressage Federation) Then they add up your stuff and give you a numeric score from 0% to 100%.

That is a complete and utter load of bullshit. I mean, yeah, they SAY that, but then exceptionally craptacular no-business-at-all-riding-this-test Shelley Browning on the saintly Vorst D should have gotten, like a 30. She got a 51%.

Real-world scores in dressage run from about 50 to about 95. Now, that's not a straight up bell curve, there. You would probably expect a normal distribution from 50 to 95 but NO, that is not how it goes.

Here's more how it goes.

50-55 -- You should not be riding this test. Srsly. This test is too hard for you or your horse is totally losing his shit or something. This is not the test for you. You are overfaced by the demands of the test on this day, please be sufficiently embarrassed by this score to go home and fix yer shit before you try again at this test. Perhaps an F.

56-60 -- This is not good work. You might be in the right test but today is totally not your day. You are not going to place AT ALL but we are not trying to shame you fiercely. Perhaps you just moved up or your horse is not overcoming the wind up his ass with a sufficient amount of philosophical detachment. This is just a little shameful but you are to be aware that this is CLEARLY not your best work. A letter grade D.

61-63 -- You're still not going to place, but we are going to let you save face with a score "in the sixties". Go home and practice more. This is a C.

64-66 -- You are in the correct test and it is clear that you have some idea of what you are to be doing here. However, your turd is not fully polished and you will only get a ribbon in a tiny local show on an unpopular test. C+ work.

67-70 -- Congratulations, you are a solid B student. You demonstrate some ability to not-suck but it's not consistent enough to go home with a ribbon at a rated show and people will still sneer at you on YouTube. You'll get a ribbon at a larger local or unrated show.

71-75 -- You are an A student. It is clear that you have pretty solid skills and you probably school/ride a higher test at home. You are doing a "good" job of demonstrating the things that you should be demonstrating in this test. They're not JUST PRESENT (that's a 6) but they actually look reliably nice.

76-80 -- You are in the gifted and talented program doing work above your grade level OR you and your horse have been showing Training 3 for the last six years. Only one of those cases is a good thing. You will win a ribbon at a rated dressage show. You may be short-listed for your country's olympic team if you're showing a high enough test. (Obviously if you're doing, like 2nd-3, you need to move up a test. But if this is your Grand Prix score... you're short-listed for the olympics.)

81-85 -- You are an olympic medalist

86+ -- Your name is Charlotte Dujardin.

(World record score for a musical freestyle is 94.3%. Guess who rode that?)
