As we roll into June, it's time for the roses again. I pruned off the dead a bit earlier this year. That didn't make the LJ because, yo, not nearly as exciting as walk-jogging or whatever. Anyway, the roses are now blooming, at least the early ones. First was either Stanwell Perpetual (light pink very short and spindly bugger but healthy) or the lighter pink rugosa (name unknown) from Roy. The dark pink rugosa from Roy was after that. Now I'm waiting for the once-bloomers to get with the program.

Waiting in the wings, as it were, are the following plants:

Banshee (we think), a light pink (almost white) fragrant thing with light pea-green foliage and an embarrassing number of leaves to the compound leaf. Flowers ball in wet weather, but when they open well they're awesome. Suckers easily and often, bush is taller than I am (5'7") without special care, exceptionally healthy foliage. Flops over when in bloom. Might bloom more if it wasn't living in the shade cast by the oaks across the road. (I might move it to a more sunny mow-aroundable location for next year.)

Charles de Mills ("Chuck"), positive ID because I bought him that way and damn if he's not a good boy. Charles is a gallica... deep maroon flowers that get purplish as they age. Millions of petals, good flower structure to boot. Does not (to my nose) smell nice but the flowers are beautiful and the bush is appallingly healthy. Grows to about boob-height on me. Suckers almost as badly as the probable-Banshee. Chuck has been in my yard for several (ten?) years now and hasn't died yet.

Fantin Latour, bought that way. Big (got as tall as I am before I got serious about fencing it off from the deer) and healthy with light pink flowers. Flowers smell nice. Some thorns. Sprawling and lax, could benefit from some support. I might have to see about doing something along those lines.

Ispahan, bought as such. This is getting bigger (now that it's fenced), blooms light pink. Supposedly gets quite big. Probably needs support. Buds all over this bush. Was entirely too healthy last year though didn't impress me as far as scent or flowers. I bough Ispahan and Fantin Latour in fall, 2008, so last summer was Year 2. Maybe I expected too much. By next year it will be too big to dig up so it's a keeper anyway. :) (Anything that gets too large to dig up gets to live.)

New Dawn (climbing). This would do better if the bunnies would stop eating all its bark off during the winter months. :(

Paul's Himalayan, which is still clinging to life despite some freezing problems every winter. Maybe I should try burying it in mulch to keep the wind off of it so that it can get bigger and maybe more hardy.

That Pink Thing From 315 (no ID available): It's a once-blooming thing, waist height or thereabouts, lots and lots of petals tightly packed and sort of buttoned in the middle. Flowers are a light pink trending to white as they age. I need to take pictures of this so that maybe I can get folks online to ID it for me. It suckers somewhat, smells awesome, very healthy/hardy. Bush is overall fairly upright. It took me three tries to get a sucker to live in my yard but I finally managed it. It's now big enough (second year) to bloom well and look decent. Go, Pink Thing, Go!

Also, Ungrateful Baby has of late been over at the other field, so I don't see her as often. We dropped Whimsy off at the other field over the weekend and I got to see Peake. She's three inches taller (now bigger than her mother) and starting to look like a real horse. Yay!
