If you owe me money and you pay late, like really late, like I get December's payment (due 12-15-06) on 1-18-07 and February's payment (due February 15) about 3-8-07, then I'm going to get kind of twitchy about where the fuck April's payment (due 4-15-07) is when it's the fucking first of May.



The borrower says that he would like all further communications to be sent certified mail. Fine by me. And all notifications of late payment, where the late penalty has been applied. Also fine by me. He claims that he keeps making timely payments but can't get mail to arrive at my PO Box because it vanishes into the ether. It doesn't come back to him as "returned to sender", either. It just vanishes. Wow. I wish that would happen to my utility bills, my 1040 forms, my car insurance paperwork... but apparently the only things that get eaten by my demonic PO Box are his timely and prompt payments. Oddly, I get the very-late payments, the ones postmarked after the most recent "Where is My Money?" phone conversation we've had. Really, the whole thing is bizarre as all hell.

Me, I'm calling the X-Files. Maybe Mulder and Scully can get to the bottom of this. I bet if Mulder and Scully had access to the account from which I am paid, they could look at the checks that have cleared and see if they have consecutive numbers or not. That'd be a real Klew, right? 'Cause if there were all kinds of timely payments disappearing into the ether, there would be lots of uncleared checks all over the check register. I mean, it's not like you can have check 381.6 or something. They go from 381 to 382.

Well, if you need to get together a brute squad for the purposes of loan terms renegotiation, let me know. I'm in a mood to be persuasive... will need to find a length of pipe or something, I haven't had a baseball bat in my possession since middle school.

Nah, no brute squad. We're sending him a "registered" letter about the penalties due and the postage due and how to tell when the late payments will be applied and here's a Real Street Address Where Someone Can Sign For Mail because he's been saying all along that he can't send express mail to a PO Box so that he can get payments in on time.

I just poked through my emails to see if I was really remembering all the late payments or if I was being a selective-memory cunt. I think he really has been late rather a lot. There have been eight payments (out of twenty-four total for the loan) and of those, November, December, February, and April (according to my records) have required dunning letters and emails to get them. That's a fifty-percent late-payment rate.

November 29: No payment yet for November.
Early December: received November payment.

December 28: No record of payment. Please send check number?
After January 9: received December payment.

Jan 19: Payment arrived for January. Close to ON TIME. Yay!

February 23: Have not received Feb. payment. Check and see if it was mailed? Reply: Was not. Will be in mail "tomorrow".

March 5: No payment for February yet. Paying late unacceptable. Needing reminders from me is getting old. Late payment penalty being applied.

March 8: received February payment, postdated March payment. Did not receive late payment penalty for Feb.

March: On time due to postdated payment included with heinously late February payment.

April 27: (phone) No payment for April. Said it would be mailed next day.
May 2: (phone -- he would not take my call but the person who answered the phone wanted to know what I was calling about, so I told him.) No payment for April yet.

And now I have to contact by "registered mail" and like that. Honestly, if he'd just make the fucking payments ON TIME, we would not be having these problems.
