How are the Marans doing?
May. 12th, 2019 04:58 pmThe Marans have moved into their permanent home in the chicken coop like big chickens. They've been getting used to the outside world for a couple of weeks in a fairly substantial hutch but here recently they've outgrown the hutch and are ready for coop living.
The chicken coop is a fairly substantial building with room DOWNSTAIRS for two or three pigs in the pigpen area (currently vacant of pigs) and twenty or so chickens in the DOWNSTAIRS chicken area (occupied by chickens). Then there is an upstairs with some storage and also two fairly spacious chicken coops, the smaller of which was vacant and in need of cleanup and repair of chicken wire and such. (The larger upstairs chicken area is occupied by Lala's mom's chickens, if anyone cares.)
Lala and I cleaned out a lot of the 'storage' area, swept the floor (okay, okay, we shoveled it first and THEN we swept it) in the storage area and in the vacant coop, fixed up the chicken wire, and threw in some fresh shavings and such. The chicken poop we put in the garden, assorted trash went to the dumpster.
Then we moved the Marans into their new home. They seemed reasonably pleased, insofar as that can be adjudged of chickens. We are pretty sure there are 3 roosters and 5 hens out of the eight we got.
