I got the truck inspected today. Yippee! Now, if I can just get the oil changed in my car before the end of the week, I'll have completed the vehicle chores for August. Only... slightly behind schedule, and better late than never.

Yesterday night, one of the UPS's at work blinked oddly and beeped for reasons unknown to me. Note to self: Do not touch any of the buttons on the UPS. None of them do good things. By the time I figured this out, everything in my office was rebooting.

Since some of the boxes in my office don't get rebooted from one year's end to the next, "run fsck manually" was a fairly major component of my evening at work. Some nights, it's porn. This was not one of the porn nights.

This was an "eight tries until the boot floppy works" night. Why is there a boot floppy? Because the BIOS on the motherboard is too old to support the size/sectors of the hard disk installed in the box. Why didn't I upgrade the BIOS to a newer version that would support the disk size? The motherboard manufacturer no longer exists. Why didn't I buy a smaller hard drive? Because this was the smallest they made when I needed to buy one. The box, to give you a ballpark for its age, has a 5 1/4" drive AND a P-90 with the math coprocessor error.

Since I found "eight tries until the boot floppy works" a bit more exciting than I generally like my work to be, I've made arrangements to upgrade the existing solution this Sunday. It'll be a fun night, I'm sure.
