It was a wet wet wet day

So I stayed indoors mostly and made sticky buns. There's a recipe, which I have posted previously. It's here.

I do not make sticky buns often because I don't love them. I like them pretty well, but I don't love them and at my age every baked good sticks directly and permanently to my (already ample) ass. So I try to restrict baked goods to my very favorites of all time. However my friend Trys's friend Bethie does love them. She does fitness walking with Lala (Trys's sister) and had asked Lala about them last weekend. I gather the conversation with Lala was something along the lines of "Could you ask (which_chick) about cinnamon rolls? She hasn't made them in forever..." Lala also likes them. So does her mom, and Trys, and well, they're kinda tasty. I mean, I get it. So I told Lala I would do sticky buns this weekend.

(You may be experiencing some cognitive dissonance on the nomenclature, here. I make sticky buns. Cinnamon rolls are those fat things with gloppy white icing on them that get sold at the grocery store bakery. Cinnamon rolls are overly sweet and generally WAY too cinnamon-y in the cinnamon parts while being woefully lacking in cinnamon on the non-cinnamon parts. Adding insult to injury, they do not usually have walnuts. The dough has like three wraps, total, which suggests baker wasn't even trying. In short, fuck cinnamon rolls. They are an inferior baked good. I make sticky buns. However, apparently NOBODY ELSE ANYWHERE uses those words and everyone else on the planet calls the damn things cinnamon rolls even though they are not like storebought cinnamon rolls or instagram cinnamon rolls... so even though I gently remind Bethie about the correct terminology, I do not play the dick card by pretending I don't know what she wants.)

So anyway, Lala inquired and since it was forever ago that I last made them... and since it was set to rain all damn day today (and did not disappoint on that front) and my house at home was cold, I went over to Lala's house and made sticky buns.

Here are some pictures that Lala took. (She does not make sticky buns but she provides moral support and documentation.)

Once the dough is rolled out, you spread softened butter on it. (Linked directions above tell you to use your hand as the best implement for that.) Here's a picture of that:

After the dough is buttered, you put a thin layer of brown sugar on it. The butter helps the right amount of brown sugar stick to the dough. Here's a picture.

After the dough has been rolled out and then buttered, sugared, and cinnamoned (the cinnamon part is just hold the cinnamon shaker high over the dough for good spattering and cinnamon the dough appropriately), it is carefully rolled up into a... snake shape and then sliced. The rolling-up thing is not super quick because the dough needs to be stretched carefully as you roll (to make the layers thinner, and yes, that IS important) and you kinda work left to right to left, rolling a little at a time. There is a knack. Here is pretty early in the rolling-up process:

These are the buns set into the prepared pans, ready to rise up and then be baked. Note that there are A LOT of wraps on these where the "cinnamon roll" things you frequently get at the store have like three wraps.

We make a batch of fresh milk bread or featherpuff bread from Laurel's Kitchen, roll it out into a sheet. Cover with brown sugar, walnuts, butter, then roll up and slice. Let it rise and then bake. Make a caramel sauce with sugar, honey, and butter, drizzle it over the top.
That way you get enough flavor inside, but you also have the decadent sticky topping, you know?
