The fourth of July function at Chez Matt's went well. There was a huge crowd, mostly people I know quite well. There were people attending whom I'd never met before, including
not_your_real's son Peter. Since he's just about eight weeks old, though, he didn't say a whole lot. I took sweet corn and a watermelon for my contribution to the covered dish end of the effort. Neither of these things really required me to cook but they were good items to schlep along. (Once you get past the veggie trays, we tend to have fairly heavy-calorie food items at these functions. I thought a watermelon would be a useful and healthy addition.) I had the good fortune to select a perfectly-ripe specimen, to boot. Go me!
At the function, Big Dave whipped my ass at Scrabble. This was not unexpected, though I was a little surprised to see him at the function. He never *used* to attend functions, but I guess he never *used* to live in the Philly area, either. Seeing Jim was kind of a surprise too -- he's another one I don't see very often now that I no longer participate in that peculiar group madness. Anyway, he (Jim) was why we were looking for Scrabble. Jim plays Scrabble in a more-or-less semipro fashion on a weekly basis with a bunch of other Scrabble dorks. Matt, who owns a wide variety of amusements, does not have Scrabble. So, we went shopping for Scrabble on the Fourth of July -- me, Big Dave, Jim, and Aimee (who came with Jim). Walmart closed about ten seconds before we got to the door. The lady preventing us from entering did not respond to the "But we need a Scrabble game -- it's an emergency!" comment. Probably years of working retail have cured her of any interest in the doings of others. *sigh* Fortunately, Target was open and had Scrabble. And then Big Dave whipped everyone (me, Jim, Aimee) at Scrabble. (He's also world-class at Boggle.) Fortunately, he makes genuinely interesting plays so it's fun even though I invariably lose.
While chatting at the party, Ivy shared the fact that her bank does 4.25% on commercial MMAs. I think I'd like to get me some of that, particularly since EST has a pretty good hunk of change. VHDAI could also use an account and so could the water co-op. This is something I'm mentioning here so that
ladyivy will notice and remember to look into that stuff for me. (We are really wild at parties. There's scrabble and discussion of interest rates. R0xx0r!)
I also discovered that
electroweak was involved in the very beginnings of 133t sp34k, sort of ur-133t. Wow. He's, like, famous.
Everyone listened politely about the delights of my boat. I'm pretty singleminded when I'm in the throes of the shiny, so I'm glad that they didn't club me like a baby seal to get me to shut up. Instead, they listened politely and asked questions like they were interested in hearing me natter on. :) Persons interested in my ongoing vitality (none more so than me, I assure you) will be pleased to know that I have purchased a pfd for use with the boat so that I can continue to flip it over with abandon. It's comfy. (Okay, technically it's for kayakers but it's got good freedom-of-movement and doesn't have stuff that sticks out to get caught on the boat.) Further progress with the boat did not occur this evening because I don't think it's wise to go out on a lake in an aluminum-masted boat when there is thunder and lightning. Tomorrow is another day.
I drove home after the fireworks and got home in the wee hours of the morning. I really like seeing everyone but a one-day trip generally makes me tired as all hell and that was the case with this one. *sigh* I am not as young as I used to be.

I will try to call James (the admin person) again this morning before I start my visits. I hope to have solid info for you by the end of the week.
